I just bought the car today from a good friend of mine(he isn't intrested w/ it any more) it hasn't run in a while. My plan is to get a new battery (diehard) and pour a quart of oil down through the valve covers. I don't have a good way to spin the oil pump.. are there any other ideas

    thanks

How long is a while?...if it isn't too long, check the oil, and run a hose from the fuel pump to a new fuel source(clean) and fire it up.

Pull the plugs and crank it over till the oil light goes out, refit the plugs and do the fuel thing and see what happens.

Nailheads are pretty tough motors. My 60 Buick hadn't been run in a good 7 or 8 years when I bought it, and the 59 sedan I have was last run in 1976. Both motors were free. I did put in new plugs, points, rotor, cap, wires, fuel pump, oil, and filter on both. I had em runnin within 10 minutes of replacing those parts.

Personally I'd just change the oil, and get some fresh gas.

  8. I agree with Fraz and the suggestion to just pull the plugs and spin it over. That way you are not loading the engine and it is spinning relatively free. It should fire up with a little time and care.
