My Merc is finally down South. NJRatRoder delivered it to my shop tonight around 8pm. Unloaded all the stuff in the trunk and interior to get a good view of the work UnionVilleHaunt (Chris) did on the chop, body mods, and gl***. Everything looks great. Many thanks to Chris for his hard work these past 8 months.

Since this is the first time I have seen the Merc, it is decision time. My original plan was to swap out the original ch***is with the SlddnMatt ch***is, but the original ch***is is pretty sweet, just needs some minor updates. Will have to think about all my choices, especially since the SlddnMatt ch***is is finished. It is good to have choices.

Matt: Did you see the 50 Merc in the background? Plus, I have my other 50 Merc up in Lexington, SC. But, you are correct, one can never have enough Mercs....

Joe. It looks very nice, well worth the wait. You dont have any old flatheads laying around do you? I never thought to ask you that before. I still have not made a decision on my engine choice. Larry

Finally received the AOD trans (again after cracked case) and installed the engine/trans combo in the ch***is.

Needed some inspiration, so I installed the fender skirts and stock rear bumper.

Great-looking car. I have a friend (who's not a H.A.M.B. member) who has a '49 Merc with '51 rear quarters, and a perfect chop. It's really the best of both worlds. And yes, the '49 dash does look much better than the '50-'51...

Today, I started to dis***emble the body to the point necessary to swap out the ch***is. Removed the hood and front clip.

Okay, decision time. I have a problem because of the door gaps accomplished during the chop are all f...ked UP. Here are some pix. Both driver and p*** door gaps start at approx 7/16" at the "B" pillar and get smaller at the "A" pillar. I have only one way that I know to fix them, cut the top of the door frame off and weld in a another door frame that better follows a uniform gap from "A" to "B" pillars. Another option might be to shave the rain gutters and mold in the correct gap at the body side.

Any opinions out there about either fix? Shaving the rain gutters might be simpler and still traditional? Post your thoughts...maybe you have a 3rd option to fix the top of the door gaps?

small diameter mild steel rod is what I like to use for this kind of stuff...coat hanger works too ! You would have to weld it to the door top if you wanna keep the driprails.

  17. Car looks great, do you have a body guy to work out little stuff for you?

Bondo would not work for long because it would be thick and eventually crack.

Thought about small diameter rod welded to the top of the door to fill the gap also. Wire hanger would not have enough diameter. It would have to be something on the order of a 3/16" diameter to be able to fill the gap with enough material to work.

Not lots of talent in this area to work the body details. Kinda screwed....

Wow that's some big gaps. I would recut the doors window frames and raise them up to correct the gaps. If that's not an option you could weld 1/8" thick plate on to the tops of the doors and trim them down to fit.

REmoved the body today. In the process of securing the body to the rotiserrie. Then I can get serious about fixing some of the details before installing the body on the custom ch***is.
