Just curious (Phx. hist.)

  1. I haven't made it through all the post yet so you may have an answer already. The red Pontiac may be the one owned by Larry. He worked at the Service Center store on north Central Ave.

Do you have Schwinn Krates? I own a few. Thanks, Ken.

Just found another neat source of images here: http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/?keyword=eller under "Eller", was an Arizona based advertising company. Most are vintage Phoenix street scenes, though the main topic was the billboards. After scanning over all 5731 of them last night, here's the ones that I thought would fit here.

    Hot rods.

Cool finds, Matt! And yeah, that Goodyear sign does look like the one on the side of the Black Canyon...

My Dad kicks himself for not keeping all of the Texaco signs and everything from the Texaco station we had on Rural and Apache in the 60's before we went into Volkswagen repair. He didn't really care about that stuff back then but now he's a big gas & oil collector.

Neat pic. Kind of weird though. Must be reflections off glass somewhere as there's a funky split at the pole with the Havoline sign on it.

Found a brief article on the Scrambler II.

Looks like the same 6 from the T in post #119.

Technically, that is Scrambler 1. The car was originally black and gold. JR Bloom made the suggestion to paint it in the yellow color it still wears today. It even still has the gold colored seat. Most likely that is the same 302 from the roadster, although once Lowell got his hands on some nitro they grenaded one or two of those motors.

I started a thread for it here ------->
    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=737695

The little roadster was sold off to fund the dragster. I found an ad for it in an old copy Drag Times want ads, It was listed for well under a grand if my memory is working.

Thanks for posting those Matt, I'd love to have copies of those if you don't mind passing them along.

No problem. Also, the Scrambler article is from Popular Hot Rodding, March 1963.

  27. Yes, it is the one by the shop and person you mentioned. Yup, I also own some Schwinn Krates too. A '68 Lemon, '69 Apple and '72 Pea.

  28. Cool,
I've got a Cotton Picker, a Lemon Peeler and an Apple Krate. They just hang in the garage now. My girlfriend and I ride my B6 and my Straight bar Panther when the weather allows.

Here's an album online labeled Phoenix Autorama 1960.

    http://jameshandyphotography.zenfolio.com/p73189976

Looks like a high school gymnasium? Guessing very early '60s and can spot the Dick Petersen coupe from post 156, Winders car from post 451 and a Scrambleresque looking T along with the more well known X-Sonic, Beatnik Bandit and Chili Catallo's Deuce.
