I always thought the Merc with the canted quads was "The Chinaman's".

I was told the story of the Barris shop fire sometime around 1974 by a guy who grew up around the corner from the shop. He was just a kid at the time but he used to hang out and watch George and his guys to see what they would create next. He told me that Jeffries Porsche almost burned up in the fire as well and that Dean managed to save a couple of cars before the flames got too intense. This is the first time I've ever heard the cause of the fire - great pictures (although very sad) - thanks for posting them.

I would love to see any pictures you might have of Dean's Porsche as I'm currently restoring the car and am trying to gather all of the period pictures I can to make sure we can get the details right.

  8. Those are some great photos of the devastation. Does anyone know the complete list of Kustoms' that were lost or damaged as a result of the fire?

  9. Is this a preview of the new book? I like it so far!

I've always wondered why they never rebuilt or recreated the wildkat? From what I understand they never even got to show the truck?

This would be a great reason why fire departments have "mutual aid" now and LA county FD took over lynwood.

    Very Very Cool.....

Its a shame to see and the story is very Hollywood dramatic, hahaha....

I'm grateful, as we all should be, for George, his talents as a car builder and having the in sight to document the kustom cars of the time. I've hung out with George and his crew on a few occasions, and they are wonderful people. All very motivated to Georges legacy, and I'm glad that they are..

They did show the car at least once...

Andy Southard took this photo of the car in 1956 at the Moneterey Kar Kapades.

I had thought about that too when I saw the Caddy taillights on that Convertible... but I don't know... Jim's Buick car was in Ohio in the early 50's as far as i know... why would it be back in California in 1958.
I will ask Jim again about it when I talk to him. A few years ago when we spoke about the Buick he mentioned that it was still around, and that somebody was in the process of restoring it... have not heard about it after that.
