Yow!! I think my worst situation, was when I was under the car welding, laying on my back. I was only using welding goggles, and the weld popped, and the slag flew perfectly into my right nostril, and burned into the back of my throat. Probably give me throat cancer in 30 years or so...

When cI was apprentice we had a on site clinic for industrial accidents. This was staffed by an extremely attractive nurse. One of the co'workers got a hot shot from a peice of slag down the front of his overalls and burnt the end of his dick.I'm not sure if he was annoyed about the burn or pleased he had a good excuse to show it to the nurse.

A buddy was doing some welding for his father...I was helping him put together a Drag car inside the garage while he worked.
He was outside, in the rain, welding a propped up hydraulic flatbed that had failed somehow.
Couldn't touch the stinger at all or he would get a shock so he was just leaving the holder open and dropping in the fresh rods from an inch or so up...then a couple of turns to tighten it. NO shocks that way.

Any who...he dropped one into the holder and the top turned, the new rod poking and shocking him thru the eyeball!

I can still FEEL the scream he let out just thinking about it!

Being inside the garage, my first thought was that the flatbed had slipped and crushed him...but before I could get across the garage he stumbled in the door holding his eye. Amazingly, it WASN'T damaged but man oh man...I was afraid to look at first! Gave him quite a headache though...

I've been burned and stuff endlessly...but THAT was the scariest thing involving welding I've ever seen, and it wasn't even me!

    LOL!
sorry man I had to laugh.
2 weeks ago I did the exact same thing but the wire went into my thumb.
when I pulled it out the wire had flesh stuck to it, yuck!

I have never poked a hole in my glove with a hot wire, so I had to go fire up the mig and see for myself. well I'll be a sum-bitch, it poked through a lot easier than I would have thought.

hot wire in your finger, slag in your ear, welding rod up your nose,... no wonder that guy in the other thread built his rotissirie out of wood!!

I used to get hurt with my MIG alot. worst was an inch long piece of white hot flux core buring a hole through my crotch. That was a bad one,i was trying to pat it out, just watching it burn into my junk. Whenever i MIGed sitting down after that,i'd put a piece of plywood over my crotch.

Now I use TIG exclusively, usually just end up burning myself. Gotta love being in the middle of a long bead and smelling burning leather. Then to find out after the weld your gloves have been on fire for about 45seconds,hah.

So this is what I have to look forward to!? I'm in the process of building my first car with no prior experience, and I refuse to let anyone else do the work. I will be learning to weld here shortly, but clumsy is my middle name. I was scared to begin with, thinking about my welds not holding, but I never calculated bodily injury into the equation...Good think I don't have a penis, with my luck that would be the first thing to go! Good luck, and I hope that heals up for you.

I taught myself how to stick weld when I was 15 and I'm 63 now. During the interveing years I've had over 90% of the stuff posted here happen multiple times. Mig, Tig, stick welding along with all of the situations you find yourself in with a cutting torch and grinder I've made a lot of payments on Cadillacs and Lexus's. Unfortunately I haven't owned any of them, but my doctors and emergency room surgeons seemed to be appreciative of my contributions.

i have run a hot .045 wire into my palm/thumb muscle, went in about 3/4", watched a guy run a hot wire into his thigh about an inch, they take forever to heal as they cauterize as they go in, burned two of my fingers to the bone when laying under a car using my cutting torch and got jamed rolling over and couldnt move with the flame burning away on my fingers, no gloves on, took months to grow the skin back, burned the hair all of my chest when a spark went through my cloths and caught my long johns on fire.

Working as a safety tech for a refinery shutdown, guy comes to me and tells mw about his employee that has a stick welding rod go straight through his hand and came out the other side. It cauterized as it passed. The guy was fine worked his shift then went home.....

i did it with a TIG rod once. I dont know how it happened, but the rod was glowing on the end still, and I think I went to take my glove off or something while I had the rod in my hand, and stuck the hot end right into the end of my finger.

  27. mig wire up under my nails, sparks down my nose and ears, inhaled grinding sparks, copped multiple eye injuries with all my safety shit on, spatter on my privates, masses inside the crooks of my arms, had 2 fingernails for a while on my right pinky, the ones that drop in your boots always make you stop real fast but the gnarliest one i have had so far was a piece of chipped slag that landed inside the brow of my eye and sizzled in, as i flicked it out it just stuck and burnt a path around the bridge of my nose.
another tradesman at work was crammed up inside a bus chassis and copped a flashback in his oxy lines, hoses blew and burnt his stomach really badly- the docs were digging at it with a needle to check nerve damage, he'd roasted himself that bad he couldn't feel it at all

There is a risk of serious infection in your hand. If it gets more tender rather than feeling better get to your doctor quick. My coworker a few years ago did the same thing. We all laughed at the time. He worked the rest of the day and came in and worked the next day too with more pain. The third day he went to hospital instead of to work. He layed in the bed with IV's for 3 or 4 days. they almost cut his finger off.

Keep a close eye on it and if you suspect its not healing get help. Steve

Dont take it lightly. Peroxide is a good cleaner. Soak it in the stuff.
    Air arcs!!!!!
I threw a 3/8 diameter red hot tipped air arc rod over a railing and it came back and impaled my thigh.
