Okay so my father just gave me his 1961 Chevy apache10 for my 23rd birthday. He has had this truck for as long as I can remember and also for as long as I can remember the truck hasn't ran. Well I got to looking at it and doing some research on it and thejalopyjournal.com seems to be where I always end up so I just decided to join the family and hopefully some of you guys can share some wisdom on these trucks for me. That's being said the problem I have with the truck right now is the starter fell out and the bolt holes on the bellhousing ears that the starter bolts to are all three broken off. I am trying to find out what transmission is in this truck and what motor so I can go about buying a new bellhousing. The transmission is a 3 speed on the tree that was moved to the floor. I am pretty positive the motor in it is a 292 from the numbers I ran but I still would like all the information I can get so I will post them as well.

Motor numbers: 3921968 GM42 on the p***enger side block
37F 5060 on the front of the head and T763 on the rear of the head both of p***enger side even though it only has one head. ( kinda hard to describe)

The transmission on the other hand I could only read GM8 on it. The other numbers are to hard to define.

  2. The casting number from what I can find shows it to be a 230 or 250. Wouldn't be original to the truck. I think a 235 maybe a 261 would be what was available for that year. As old as the truck is the engine could have been swapped out a time or two.

Congratulations. Those are nice trucks, and the 292 is a great engine.
They are different from the 235, so be careful in ordering some parts.
My Brother has a brand new dual intake/carbs/headers setup he bought years ago, and then sold the truck before he could do the install. I can hook you up with him. He'll give you a great deal, 'cause the parts are more $ now, than when he bought them.
There's also a buddy that has the bellhousing/starter for sale.

Thanks guys for the advice. It very well maybe the 250 or 230. I'll get some pictures posted tomorrow when it's daylight of the motor so maybe that can help. Are all the bellhousings the same for the 230,250 and 292? I do know the truck is an inline6 so I know a v8 bellhousing will not work and that's about all I know. I'm really anxious to get this piece of art on the road again and to think the only thing holding me back is a starter mounting bracket aggravates me

Cool truck. Good luck with it, keep it in the family, and take your dad for the first ride after you get it fixed.

292 has the fuel pump midway between the front & rear of block, behind the motor mount on p***. side,...quickest way to tell a 292,..just about any 55 or newer Chevy bellhousing will bolt up

Awesome. Thanks rusty. It is most defiantly not a 292 then. The fuel pump is at the front of the block on p***enger side. I have located a bellhousing locally for $50. Going to pick it up after work. Here is a picture of what is under the hood. Pretty positive it's either a 230 or 250 64-72 era from the casting numbers. Thanks everyone for the advice. Where should I look to find a good forum about removing the bellhousing in this truck? IMG_0851.JPG

you have the perfect project vehicle...1. it's already at home 2. you got it for free.
Makes me wish I bugged my dad more about his '40 Ford that he had, most of the expensive stuff had already been done it just needed to be put back together.

Welcome to HAMB that is a cool truck there is a lot of knowledge here start a build thread and don't be afraid to ask questions Hobo Jim

  11. It does look like the later 250 style. The V8 bellhousing works on those.

Please indulge my maybe dumb question. First thing I saw on your truck was the hood and grille ??. Looks like someone swapped a later than 1961 hood to the truck.....or is this actually a 1963 and up truck with a 1961 grille in it ?. If it was 1963 or later, then the engine in it would be "correct" being a 230 or 250. Also, if you have not already done so, get to www.stovebolt.com and www.inliners.com. And once again, welcome to the HAMB.

Just realized I may be confused.......is the truck you are asking questions about, the truck in your avatar or......as I look at the blue/green paint on the cowl.....is it a different truck ?

Tractorguy the truck in my avatar is a picture of a 61 with a 63 hood and grille combo that I like. Mine is the one with the messed up paint. Here is a better picture. IMG_0846.JPG

Looks like somebody before you installed a 62 and later 230/250. That's really good news! Has 7 main bearings, weighs less than the old standard 1961 235 motor and will last much longer. Also, parts interchangeability is much better. A 62-72 bellhousing will work from a 6 ccylinder or even a V/8 chevy pickup. Has to be a pickup for the bellhousing mounted rear motor mounts. Removing it is straight forward. Remove driveshaft, transmission, starter, bellhousing dust shields [if they're still there] and clutch linkage. Block up back of motor with a wooden block and a small hydraulic bottle jack under the oil pan [block between jack and pan] after removing rear motor mount bolts and jack it up a smidge...take out all 6 bellhousing bolts and jack the motor up enough to get the bellhousing off...easy-peasy. Have a beer while cleaning new/used parts. Re***emble.
