I just bought a 10 gallon pressurized sand blaster for 100 bux and I need to know where i could buy the sugar sand for it. Could i just go to the hardware store and buy it or do I have to order it online somewhere?
i get mine from the auto paint supply store or the took rental store// whatever you do DONT get "play sand" from lowes or home depot
And wear a respirator when blasting. The sand you'll be using is very high in silica and can cause lung damage if inhaled over time.
silicosis = bad news. Wear a high quality dust mask. There are a wide variety of medias, and all the major home improvement chains carry at least one. If what you're blasting is really important, consider an engineered media that your local body supply house can get. Little bit of spendy on the "sand" goes a long way toward performance. I too have a portable blaster, and no booth. Tend to use big cardboard boxes in the yard, decent recovery rate, highly disposable, easy cleanup, hard on the back to stay leaned over em.
ive had good luck with 000 sand for sheetmetal,,,most older sheetmetal is nice and heavy gauge,,but be careful, you can still warp it just from the heat the sandblasting generates. i bought mine at a building supply company. it was about $7.50 for a 100 lb bag...(man,,,i wish they made them in 50 lb bags,,hahaha),,,they get kinda heavy toward the end of the day...
What i`m using this for is a minibike frame i`m fixing up. The blaster is a Grand Rapids 10 gallon blaster. I have used a seam blaster in the past on a guys f100 bed and warped the shit out of it. Its a messy noisy as hell job but on a bike frame i have no choice. also would a paint respirator work for this?
use a blasting hood too, itll keep a lot of the sand out of your eyes, hair, etc,,,,,,,,,,tape your pockets closed with duct tape, put your socks over your pants bottoms,,,you'll look like a total dork, but that sand gets everywhere,,
