I like the chop as is. The proportions just sit right with me...

  5. U like the laid back front window? I might just have to get used to it

im not a fan of the laid back front window, they have always looked a bit odd that way. makes the vent windows real pointy looking. the chop looks like it has a bit more out of the front than the rear, looks to have a "peaked" look in the roof at the "B" pillar area. something is up with the rear glass, is it plexi? or no gasket or something?

  7. not plexi.. out of another " unknown car" . window was in car when the guy bought it and used it with the chop... i know nothing just getting feelings and options.. thinkin of buying a uncut roof and pillars and doing it clean... not sure

  8. the windshield is plexi though not a fan of that !!!

the rear glass is out of a late 49-50 merc, it just looks sunk in a bit like it has no gasket or its using a universal one or something..

  10. Matt you're exactly right, the window is just laid in there with silicone around it

    Hey,

The chop, with the tilted A Posts is a little street-roddie lookin, and more than a few of those were done in the 80s! Those and the front fenders are easy enough to fix for a metalman with basic skills. Finding a clean roof clip for a '49-'51 Merc two door would run into major money and isn't necessary to fix yours.

  12. I have never liked Mercs with the windshield layed back. Before removing the teardrops, maybe consider putting Buick headlights on. The car doesn't look bad though. Hop on the HAMB Merc Club thread and see what's up....I'll add you to the roster when I get an extra minute.

Drive it while you are trying to decide...It may grow on ya. Doesn't look that bad that you have to fix it, IMHO. I have a rear bumper and some glass bubble skirts if you are interested.

I see where you wouldn't like the body mods, but first things first.. get a decent dash and steering wheel back in that thing!!! :O

If you can get a roof cheap and have the skills to re-chop it, then go for it, I personally dont tihnk it looks that bad as it is though.. for now.

    Looking forward to more progress.

  19. Thanks bad Bob and the rest of you

I personally feel that the roof already has a nice shape. I think a proper rear window gasket with stainless and a glass windshield with correct stainless trim and gasket would do a world of good for the chop job. I also believe that you could undo the teardrops in the headlights without replacing what look like very nice front fenders otherwise. Clean replacement front fenders will not be cheap.

If you get the details right, this should turn out to be a very nice car.

If you're sitting in the backseat facing the trunk, look at the sides of the rear window channel. I'd bet you will see a small slice and weld seam there. They probably took one inch out of the vertical height of the window opening, and used window weld cement to hold the Merc window in. It's different, I've seen it before, but if that's what happened short of cutting it open again you won't get a rubber and stainless in. Good luck with the car!

I'm glad to see a Hamber bought this car. I've actually seen this in person and I did like some things about it, but I hope you get rid of the traditional in-dash television. The previous owner told me that he removed the bump from the instrument panel above the steering wheel, and filled it in to replace it with those gauges - I think a stock Merc dash looks great, so I didn't feel it was an improvement. He couldn't find the grille extension and turn signal housing for the front grille, so he put in the teardrops. It would take some creativity to make that Merc grille work with those. It has a lot of potential - good luck with your new car.

  28. Thanks guys for the hope .. I'll get better dash pics for u !!
