Just plain exhausted...more hot air

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fatstang, Aug 16, 2008.

  1. I am having exhaust leaks when using lap joint band clamps. I went though a lot of work building and having the system powder coated but the clamps still leak. The clamps are tight. Anybody else have this problem with this style clamp? I don't want to take the exhaust apart again and I was thinking of maybe putting some kind of gasket material between the clamps and the joint. Any ideas before I give up on these and go back to the regular U clamps? FYI old picture taken before start up.

Try the Orange colored hi-temp Permatex, I think yor problem is too smooth of surfaces to seal, so the slightest imperfections let the gases go by.

I've had good luck on the turbos on my Peterbilts, they get pretty hot, using the banding clamps similar to yours and the orange stuff.

Roll up some aluminum foil and wrap around the joint before putting the clamps on, keep it heavy on the smaller pipe side. Also tighten the clamps till both sides come in to contact with the center section. You need to stretch the stainless so it will take quite a bit of tightening. Orange silicone works pretty good to, put it around the joint, then the clamp. We us a bunch of these clamps in the school bus garage. Joe
