I loaded this on my trailer about a year ago with a forklift. Went to finally unload it and it wont roll. It's the rear end I think. I put rims and tires on so it could unroll it . Taking one tire off at a time, all four turned, so It's not the brakes.. As I said, I am sure it's in the rear differential The left rear is locked up and drags. when I try , the whole axle turns a little then it just drags. My thoughts were to start taking the rear apart, but i wouldnt know what not remove. I dont want to take out the wrong parts and have the axles sliding out. Any suggestions or quick fix's would be greatly appreciated.
I have a set of wheel dollies just for situations like this. OR ... if you can unload on pavement ... a floor jack under the center section will allow you to move the Chevy. .
had this problem on a panel truck, found out it had the wrong wheels on it and the front wheels were dragging against the tie rod, of course tis is why i got the panel truck cheap
who needs all 4 wheels to spin to move a car? many moons ago a buddy bought an old VW that was sitting in the weeds for years. we flat towed it with a rope about 5 miles through town with one wheel totally locked up. screeching and leaving a black mark the entire trip. about a block from his house the tire on the wheel in question blew up. I know this doesn't help you but I thought it was an interesting story.
I can drag it. Thats what I have done just to get it out of the way. But you see, as many of us on here, I have a wife that doesnt complain about a couple cars in the back yard, or the 5 trailers. that drag mark across the middle of HER back yard, Ummm, Trying to avoid the couch. lol I took the wheel off again and found that it does not turn at all now. I dont know if something came loose in the brakes and is wedged in there or what. I couldnt get the drum off. Any suggestions on that? Am I correct that these axles are like the more modern ones in that the drum should come off and leave the wheel studs? probably a dumb question, i know. Prior to this 34, I have only had 50's era cars, I havent taken apart anything this old b4.
Tried beating on it, nuttin. I have had to do that b4 and I know it takes a hard hit to break it free. No luck. I thought about cutting it ?
don't cut it, they are not making those parts anymore! do you have another axle to slide underneath it?
If you have not already, raise the other back wheel off the ground also and see if it will turn, if it does problem is probably in the driveline, if no difference, it could be out in the hub and brake drum.
Brake drum is full of rust and crap that has just wedged super tight between the shoe and drum. Or a wheel stud has come loose and slipped in a bit to the inside.
somehow you have to get the drum off.if the wheel cyl.bolts from the back take the bolts off, line, etc.you can also cut the retainers for the shoes.keep hitting the front, sides of the drum.if that doesnt work get a slide hammer and hook it to the back of the drum and go to town.
A few years back ,1960 as a matter of fact, i had a 35 standard and was unable too remove the drums. It seems like i removed the rear cover from the rearend ,removed the C-clips holding the axle in and pulled it apart. Now if I'm wrong we can blame it on old age and memory loss.L.O.L. thats been a few years back. I can't remember how the drums and axle were put together because i tossed it and built a hot rod. JIM
