(Blue Oval), You might want to check this group out if you already haven't http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=127
My flattie will accellerate and merge onto a highway just fine. It will cruise at 70+ MPH and it's been over 90 at Pocono Raceway. Any quicker or faster in a Shoebox is asking for trouble. The Flattie stops traffic at cruises and shows. Put in the SBC and you may as well keep the hood closed. By the way, I love the 327 Chevy. Put it to work in a nice Bowtie project.
wooooooooo - "asking for trouble!" now there is the HOT ROD SPIRIT! ha ha ha really - it is all about the show!! what will the people think!!!!
Do what ever it takes to get the car running. It's more fun to drive it,than looking at in your garage.
thats ok..they always lose anyways..in more ways than one just go to the dragstrip and see what everyone else is running in their fords...i cant tell you how many fords race with chevy engines in them..and win..win win like no tomorrow..watch "pinks" and see how many mustangs and other blue oval models say they are running SBC's in them..9 out of 10 there that ought to fire them up some on a serious note: reliability and cost..its a win win situation..and easy and it comes down to..." your ride your cash" do what you want
I own a chevy. Have kept the original chevy in my chevy. The inline six is original to my car. I not only believe chevy in a chevy and ford in a ford, but I believe to keep the engine original. I have also owned ford flatheads. Great motor. Keep it original..........you will never ever regret having it original. If find a need for horsepower, read the following. http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/hdrp_0511_ford_flathead_engine/index.html
Wasn't trying to do that. Just trying to get some info. As far as sheetmetal I like Ford cars way better. I just like hot rods and keep it semi-old school. It's not like I'm gonna put in a TPI 350 or anything. I just want to get some more hp and everybody has good points but 1 thing to remember 300 hp sbc $1,000 300 hp flatty <$10,000. And I dont have that kind of coin.
I like the chevy idea for you (blue oval) since your gonna be trucking your wife and kids around and you want something reliable.
Thats really not the best thing to say the flathead was an inferior design that just so happened to look cool.
i've read lots of these threads since i have a 50' ford coupe. there's always ford in a ford vs. who cares, put that chevy in there. i like the idea of having the original engine in there. but that's if the thing is in running condish. money is a factor when an engine dumps on you. being able to shut down some kid in a japanese economy car seems rad, too. you can shut them down with a SBC or SBF. it sounds like you don't mind the SBC and the price is right. plus rocking that 8BA in a model A just looks rad. very good idea.
That car needs a flatty, just like my Plymouth needs a hemi. I see my SBC as a 'placeholder', just until the hemi is rebuilt.
I recently was stuck with the same problem.Flat head was running ok but would have it problems from time to time and with two kids being stuck on the side of the road is not fun.One day my father in law says to me hey you want to buy a rebuilt 283 and a rebuilt 400 trans to put in your car for 300 bucks hell yes i said.i know it would have costed me a lot more to fix the flat head to run right and its money i just dont have .I try to build cars within my budget and the 283 was within my budget if some one doesnt like it thats to bad but at least im almost back on the road.Keep the flat head for the next build or use it to fund a new one as long as you are still building its all good.
Sell the sbc and find a running Ford engine. They aren't that expensive are they? That flatty will make a light model A go better than it would do in the shoebox. Save it for one day.
You'll have to decide for yourself. You won't get any flak for keeping the flathead, but as you can see, you're going to get a lot of flak for putting a Chevy engine in a Ford. Just something you should realize before you decide. If it were mine, I'd either trade the SBC engine for a Ford engine to go in your shoebox, or trade the shoebox for a Chevy car that needs an engine (don't they all??? ).
Ill agree with this...its just hard to beat the coolness factor of a flathead...small blocks are played out in my book...every body seems to have one...i guess it all comes down to what your taste is...everybody uses the small block cuz they are cheap and easy to build with good power...they are just way to main stream...in my opinion it takes real hot rodders to build and drive flatheads
