here's a couple thoughts on event photo threads.

first off I think everybody like photo threads... the more the merrier I say.

second, posting photos is a time consuming process. I assume posting thumbnails is equally time consumig but I like to post pics. even putting your pics on flicker or another host and setting up a link for everyone to look at takes a bit of time. I bet I spent 2 hours on the last thread I did and it disapeared pretty quickly. I gave it a couple bumps myself. I like to see the hit counter go at least 1000.

the thing is photo threads don't get many responses, so they fade away to oblivion pretty quick. when I look at a photo thread I always put some comment, even if it is just "cool pix" to bump it back up and give it a little more life.

this ain't just to stroke my own ego, since I'm sure I miss lots of pictures from others even though I'm here all the time. stuff gets to the 3rd or 4th page pretty quickly around here.

so a couple thoughts here... for one, if you guys see a photo thread post a comment to keep it alive, also I was thinking maybe there could be a place for photo threads, or links to them that stays up front for a few days.

what do you guys think ?

Having spent many hours posting full sized photos of events, some as many as 200 photos, I always appreciate comments, questions and if nothing else, just a bump" to keep the thread (and the work) from disappearing into "thread oblivion".
I always try to remember to post a quick comment as a "thank you" to the thread originator, and to keep his/her thread alive for awhile longer.
Many terrific threads go away too quickly and therefore, many wonderful photos go unseen by those HAMBers who only check in once a day or so.
I'll be taking lots of photos again this saturday and spending the afternoon getting them cleaned up, cropped and shoved into Photobucket so I can post them full-sized for the saturday night viewing crowd.
Its a lot of work, but also, a lot of fun. The comments and "thank you's" make it all worthwhile.
Now when I go to events, I feel like I'm "on assignment" for the HAMBer who couldn't make the event in person.
It's is a nice thing to remember to give the thread a bump or two with a comment, a "thank you" or a question.
We all like to see our "work" get some attention and comments are always appreciated.
    "Bumps" are cool, too...

Man, this one is dropping like a rock too. Ok, here's a bump.

On a serious note, I personally really do appreciate anyone taking the time to post of the pics. Especially since I haven't been able to make the time to get to many shows the last year or 2, not to mention all the ones too far away I would never make regardless. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to post photos of events and their projects too, very much appreciated.

I don't know...hmmm. I kind of like it, but, events that are current shouldn't get "lost" on a sticky thread with threads that are months or years old...maybe I'm missing something here.
I mean. if I post a thread like I will this saturday with a title such as...:
"Big hot rod show at Chicago park today"

then that should be allowed to live out it's "life" on the main board for the day or two that it gets comments/bumps

Now, when it starts to "sink for good", maybe a link under the poster's HAMB name...for reference, but...it would need to have its title remain intact, so it's not just a link gibberish

Part of the fun of posting current event photos is to make them available to all, as quickly as possible to the HAMB masses, which means that they should still have a chance to be on the main board until they outlive their "viewability".

I think what 49ratfink is suggesting is compiling links to all the threads of a certain event into one stickied thread so they are easy to find. For example if there are 10 event posts for say the GNRS links would all be on one thread that would be stickied for a few days.

If the person starting the thread uses the Event Coverage "prefix", then it's easy to search for event coverages and even only show threads with that prefix.......

I have always wondered why there are not different sections to the HAMB. I mean having a section dedicated to show coverage is something that almost all of the other sites I go to have. You don't have to go overboard with different sections, but have some different areas for different types of threads will mean that they stay "active" longer and not get onto page 6 in an hours time. I check in probably 3 or 4 times a day while I am at work and even with that there are threads that I miss.

There basically is if guys use the prefixes when they title their threads. Just go to the bottom of the page and search threads on what ever topic you want the are about 8 different ones.

  16. The mods can merg all the same type of posts together with very little effort, i do it on a site that i am a mod on, granted not this much traffic but none the less same procedure. i think they also need a o/t place on here also so everyone that wants to post o/t stuff can do so and others can get it on the bickering or whatnot and it won't interfer with the car threads.

There was a suggestion in Q&A section that the prefixes should be separated into folders or sub sections of the main board, but this was out-woted. I for one would really like to see a separate build or project section... And events :)

I was thinking of one sticky with links for all threads for one show. or maybe even all the current shows for that weekend.

the actual posts would be out in the main body and move up and down and page to page as they normally would.

I don't know... I spent 2 hours sunday doing a Strangers picnic post and it was way long gone by the next morning. I bumped it back up myself a couple of times. I think it was gone long before it "outlived its viewability" that's my whole point with this. they disapear while thay are still current events.

I have a shitload of photo albums from my film days. they've only ever been seen by a handfull of people. I think it's pretty cool to come here and share with the whole world... as well as see others stuff from all over the place. where else can you see car show photos from Sweden, Australia Japan, and everywheres else?

the recent goodguys show must have had 10 people post thier pics, I only saw 3 or 4 until they were grouped together by monsterflake

I have over >2300 pics of various car shows that I would put up here if there was an easy way to do up to 200 at a time. Now, most of them would not be exactly what this site is about, but I don't have the time to go and weed them all out when all the viewer has to do is hit next or not click on that thumbnail.

We have had a free picture gallery and message board for many years for car buffs, hotrods, race cars ect and all seperated in different albums for ease in navagiation. We have covered several Austin events this year and the last was the benefit at A.S.S.. We dont have any thing blocked so if you want to cut/paste or copy its there for the taking.Going back in the Albums there are many nostalgia pictures in the 50's 60's,old service stations and weird motorcycles and regular so we try to have something for every one. If you have 50 to 300 pictures we can and will post them (no porno-LOL) for you including you name and event coverage if you wish. Many Hamber's have this type of site also and if you look at there listings you will see them. http://www.hotrodchat.com/gallery/ and http://www.voy.com/170705/

    No doubt:
quote:[The HAMB seems to work pretty good as it is], but nobody wanted to say it isnt.
These are just suggestions, and i also would like to see a few sub sections or sub folders, as in:
    Tech(articles and help),
    Events(coverage and flyers),
    Build threads,
    O/T,
    and whateverelse.....
just like i got all my tools and general shop stuff divided and put away in diffrent drawers.
Sure i could do leaving everything in the same place, but hey.......
Now, the HAMBs search option works a lot better than me lookin for tools in my garage:),
but still it would be nice to have it "sub-foldered", if you pass me the term:confused:, and have everything in its own place.
Whats the boss take on this one?
