I have an issue with the 63 fairlane. Rather than a running issue.... I have a shutting off issue. I turn the key to the off position and the car keeps running. I can take the key out and it keeps running. I am having to disconnect the wire to the dizzy from the ignition coil to get her to stop running. I plug her back in she starts fine, I drive her to the next place then have to disconnect the wire again.

Can this be as simple as the ignition switch?

    Thanks guys

I had a bent blade terminal with constant power on the back of an ignition switch, contact with the keyed on ignition coil power wire once.

Probably a faulty ignition switch or a fray in the wire giving it consant power, keep the coil unhooked when your not running or you'll fry the points. Simple fix would be to toggle switch it on the dash.

  3. Change the Alternator, Generator or regulator recently? Happens quit often in Alternator powered cars. The Alt gets wired wrong and while the alt is spinning it is powering the ignition circuit. Next time try to remove the cable from the Alt/Gen, if it still stays running it is not the problem, look elsewhere.

The generator was replaced with an alternator well over a year ago, and this is the first time this has happened. Sometimes prior to this I would turn the key and nothing would happen at all. So I went out and bought a new ignition switch, but never had another issue until today.

I have pulled the wire rom the coil and will be disconnecting the battery when I change out the ignition switch. I hope it is this easy!!

I had the same issue with my 52, it was a bad ignition switch. I had an after market switch in there already so I cant help you on getting yours out of the dash. But it does sound as simple as the switch.

ok I got the new ignition cyl in place and ran it through the motions before I hooked back up the battery and reattached the wire from the coil to the dizzy. I got back in after checking everything.... turned the key once and the generator light came on as it always does.... so far so good. Turn it again to start the car and I got the motor to turn over once (as in it tried to start, one revolution then nothing). Turn the key back to off then try again and I get nothing. What just happened?????

check your fuses, battery might be low on juice... do you hear the starter clunking like it engages the flywheel, but does nothing?

Sounds like you replaced the cylinder, but not the housing? The electrical connections are in the housing, not the cylinder. Get a new housing or a generic one from the parts store, then wire it in like the original. You should pretty easily tell if you put test leads on the back of the housing of the ignition. One power feed in, one accessory, one ignition and one to the starter solenoid. Turn the key back, should have power to the accessories and nothing else. Turn the key forward and both accessory and ignition circuits should be hot, but not the starter. Turn it the rest of the way and the starter solenoid circuit gets power as well.

It sounds like your housing is buggered up to me, maybe metal dust shorting it out internally and just generally causing gremlins.

Ok the battery is taking a LONG charge... the charger is still humming away saying the battery is taking a full charge. Here is my question. If the wiring to the housing is buggered up... how do I remove the housing?? I am kinda shake on wiring things.

  18. I think your car is mad at you.

What did you do to piss it off???

I do not know.... but I keep a 2 x 4 in the door jamb in case Christine tries to close the doors and trap me. Also there is a 4 x 8 propping the hood open and the rear tires are off the ground just to be safe!!:D

If the ignition switch doesn't fix it remove/check the wire coming from the starter solenoid to the dizzy. You might have a sticking contact in the solenoid feeding the dizzy 12vdc power.

When this whole mess started I had to pull that wire off the dizzy to get the car to stop running, could that have mucked it up??

Check for a one-way diode inline to the coil from the alternator. If it fails the ignition is still fed. Ask me how I know. Had a ballast resistor fail and bypassed it to get home and burned the inline diode.Wouldn`t shut off. Ford 302 now has a one wire GM alternator.

ok, after messing with the ignition switch then the not wanting to start... I am right back where I started from.

I put the freshly charged battery back in the car. hooked back up the coil wire to the dizzy and she fired right up. Then I went to turn her back off and... FRACK she still runs when she is turned off. All my gauges go down like they are in the off position. The radio turns off... but just like the energizer bunny... she keeps going.

I will post pictures of the alternator and the wiring that runs to the starter solenoid. I will also see if I can crawl under the dash to get a picture of the wiring coming off the starter housing in the dash. I am lost here....:(

    Ok here are some pictures.
This is focusing on the line running from the alternator to the coil.[IMG]
This is the end of the wire running to the coil.[IMG]
The wire continuing from the coil... notice it is crimped on the right end.. goes from white to black... and it is electrical taped on the left... it was really hot to touch, I guess it rests on the coolant hose from the radiator and that is why is is electrical taped to protect it?? (previous owner did this) [IMG]
this is where the wire leads to ... you can see it is part of a clip that goes into the alternator.[IMG]
another picture of the tape job. I am going to unwrap the tape and see what is going on under it, but anyone got any ideas?[IMG]

this is in response to the idea that the alternator is feeding the ignition coil and therefore keeping the car running when the key is in the off position.

Ya know this is really simple to see if the alt. is the prob. Disconnect the big wire off the back of the alt. ,start the car and then turn the key off. If the engine then quits you have a feedback prob with the alt. If the engine stays running with the alt out of action the prob is else where.

OK so the woes continue.... I tried to take the wire off the back of the alternator this morning.... there is not one big wire. There are two smaller wires and a clip at the bottom of the alternator. I undid the wires and went to start the car, turned the key and nothing... not even the light saying I had juice... the radio will not even come on. I put everything back together the way it was last night when I got it to start and still I get nothing. I am not good with wiring so where do I start and what do I do??

I think I must have really pissed off the car somehow!!

At this point I'm afraid you need to look for knowledgeable help as it looks like you are in over your head skills wise. If you were around here I would already be there as I like odd ball challenges. There is only so much you can do on the Internet without pictures and you having a basic idea of what's happening. Put a toggle switch in the power wire to the coil until you can get some help to sort this out, that way the car will be drivable.
