Just cought a commercial for the Ken Burns series on WWII that will start this Sunday on PPS. If it is half as good as his Civil War coverage it should be well worth watching.

  2. Thanks for the heads-up.I have yet to see ANYTHING that Ken Burns has authored that isn't top shelf.

I saw the preveiw/making of for this. I really liked the Civil War series. This is supposed to be all regular guys. No arm chair generals or experts, just real vets.

I've personally never heard of him, but I'm a WWII nut. My Donna read in the paper that it's a 15 hour series with the first one being 2 1/2 hours long this Sunday. I've got it set to record. (funny how we don't use the word 'taped' anymore)

I may have a hard time with this one. Because of the hot rods and my love of that period, I find myself getting emotional. I guess that's stupid on my part.

The civil war was amazing but this one gets pretty close to home. I'll be checking out the war birds and the cars.

I'll try to keep my composure when the heroism comes up.

People ask about the "exit strategy" for Iraq, and we still have troops in Germany, Japan, and Korea. There is no exit from world **********. It's a full time job :p

The "exit strategy" for WWII was to ENTER the homeland of the enemy and not EXIT untill they learned to play nice. Sometimes I think "total war" isn't such a bad idea. You get hurt screwing around with limited war.

  11. I'm not sure what this statement has to do with the post;I have the idea that it(the post)was meant to inform others on the board who admire Ken Burns' work. It was not meant to foment a political discussion(taboo topic here).

For what it's worth;Ken Burns has done some very serious automotive-related do***entaries including the one about the gentleman(his name eludes me at the moment)who drove cross country from San Francisco to New York City in 78 days in 1906 on a hundred dollar bet.

The program on the San Francisco to New York trip was called "Horatio's Drive". It was well worth seeing. Rusty.

Trust me, you have no idea how close to the truth that is. If you did you probably wouldn't have wrote it. A lot of people are going to get a wakeup call where this country and her policies are concerned. It's going to sting at first because no one likes to find out they have been fooled. They'll get over it.... eventually.

Very true. The baseball series was great. And I could actually care less about baseball, otherwise. His jazz series was phenomenal. I am a major jazz fan and so enjoyed that thoroughly. It also doubled as an excellent overview of 20th century society and it's cultural history in general.

Does anyone have contact info for him? It'd be great to have him do a little something about this thing called hot rodding. No one tells history like Ken and his crew. It would be great to see something like that.

  21. Just finished watching the first episode a few minutes ago.All I can say is,"He's done it again".And thanks for remembering,"Horatio's Drive".I think I might let some cash loose and pick up a few of his do***entaries.
As for contact info;I'm not sure but I think he still has family in the Ann Arbor Michigan area.He graduated from the same high school(Pioneer)that my wife did;only ten years later. His name is listed in the Pioneer High School alumni book.

Thanks Tommy, that is why I started the post. I remember 1961 when the Civil War centenial started and I started collecting books on it. History that was 100 years old, and WWII was something everyones Dad was in 16 years earlier, sure wish that I'd asked Dad more questions about his time in the service.

We on the Eastern front can't watch this online but we can buy it from PBS for US$179 plus postage........

Or maybe we can get it is the monthly ''pledge drive'' for a $1000 membership pledge

It would be good if people here in the EU could see this at the moment

It has been too easy for some everywhere to forget the past

The series has been great so far. I have learned a bit from watching it as well.

Also, I'm sure I'm not the only one here that gets excited when they show the homefront with all the "late model cars" in the shot.

I caught the second episode last night. Man, I was way into the bombers! Those guys were living the "appe***e for destruction" big time. Excellent footage.

I've been up too late the last two nights watching this as well. Great program. It's been tough keeping my composure as my dad was in the Pacific theatre and yesterday was the second anniversary of his death...

It is both funny and sad that this past century has "advanced" at such an incredible pace that events that happened less than 65 years ago are so difficult to recall... for some.

  27. i've watched both episodes so far and they have been great. my only complaint is on some of the footage of B-17's..whatever sound track they used sounded more like a 65HP continental

I've caught the first 2 & will continue till the end. A very well done show. I like the part of giving names & street addresses of the soldiers/sailors, seems to make them more 'next door neighbor' type.
Sure would be great if we could get something (short of war & killing ) that could unite the country again the way they were then.
