Just got my Jan 2008 ROD and CUSTOM mag and just want to congratulate you on being "Spot On" in your Up Front thoughts on folks who use lawn chairs to reserve parking spots at car shows. And your giving "Permission TO Move These Chairs" is a rule that must be followed.
Kev, SPOT ON!! Sorry this is a "NO SAVING ZONE" Get in line-or-Get out!!--Sololobo/Roadburners of Omaha
I too read this and laughed. I would love to be sitting by the guy who owned the chairs when he reads this. Good one Kevin, Thanks!
I agree on the topic. I hate that kind of holding spaces **** - almost as the person standing in a parking space on the street. But, as I get older, I just have to realize some people are just jerks and I just can't worry about that kind of thing too much. I do appreciate someone calling those kind of people on that though. Also, a bit OT, but "Jan 08" issue. Isn't it a bit early for a Jan. issue of any mag? Are they getting like car companies now? I don't pay much attention to the dates when I pick up mags, but seems a bit jumping the gun to me. If it is out now, why don't they just call it a Nov. issue, or at best Dec.?
I understand the the don't save spots issue.. It does **** though when someone wants to park right in the middle of your club when you saved a spot because one of your club members was having issues with his car in the morning and was just gonna be a little late... Jason.
True story... At the tampa show a few weekend ago, my father and I showed up early on Saturday morning to get "under the tree". We park, my uncle parks next to us and a few more of our group park on either side of us. There are already jack***es saving spots with their chairs including one right next to our group. It was: Pee Wees truck Lawn chair Some douchbags suburban Anyway, another guy from our group comes pulling up and, nowhere to park so, my father, who was already standing, grabs the chair and moves it. "WHAT THE **** ARE YOU DOING!!!" comes the scream from the douchbag. My brother (An Air Force special operations SGT) and myself (A former Army Ranger) both look over to see this guy charging at my father. Now, my dad (A former police officer and Marine) looks at the guy and camly states. "I am moving this chair". The guy then screams again. "**** YOU!! PUT IT BACK!!!" By this time my brother and I are both walking over to the douchbag. He looks at the both of us and said "Fine. I'll just take my damn chair". End of heroics.
I haven't read his "opinion" yet BUT what about me who gets there with my buds and have been parked in "my" spot for a couple of hours but at some point I pile some friends in my convert to take them for a cruz around the fairgrounds. Shouldn't I be able to cruz without having to worry about not having my spot to come back to?
I don't get it, why would anyone care if someone holds a space. Are they the "prime" spaces and your power parkers? Me , I go places and meet up with guys from a couple of states, whoever gets there first holds a couple spaces so we can park together.
I moved a chair once at a show and when i returned to the car i had a new scratch on the fender,,,,,the guy next to me said somebody stoped in front of my car a ask him wheres the ***hole driving this car,,,, He didn't know me but said we moved his chair and parked and was out looking at the other cars,,,he informed the chair guy,,that his chair was behind my car,,,,, He said the guy ranted about whipping my *** and banged his chair into the side of my car,,,, In my opinion a parking place ain't worth the trouble or the risk,,,HRP
Denise, you need to read the article. Kevin states he understands saving a spot while out cruising durring a show. It was more so directed at saving spots at the hotel where he had no place to park.
Kevin forgot to add the one place where he has the most difficult time with his spot-saving chair--the "pit" at a Justin Timberlake show. As far as shows go, saving your own spot is one thing (you made claim first), but saving for others is gay...if you wanna park together (as a club), arrive together; true club members stick with their own in times of trouble, so if someone breaks down, the club's down (to help). Otherwise, leave the chairs behind the cars, not in-between.
I agree. If I were to take a spot I wouldn't always want be there to protect the car because I would want enjoy the show.
You could always stop worrying about this issue by not going to a car show that attracts power parkers. The backyard with a couple of close buds ain't such a bad place to be.
This is a hot topic with the crowd I run with... I have NEVER felt the need to "RESERVE" a spot with a chair, but man on man, if you move someone's chair to park, you better be prepared to fight. What's even worse, YELLOW TAPE, wtf! Getting (and keeping) that prime parking spot is a HUGE issue with some people. Last year, we drove all night without sleep to the GG show at Charlotte. We got there at 3:00AM. THERE WAS ALREADY A LINE OF 50 CARS WAITING TO GET IN AND CLAIM THEIR SPOT. Rich
That happened to us in Louisville this year at the hotel. Two participants trailered their cars. The way they parked, each truck and trailer took up 4 spaces each plus one more space for each car. So, two hotrodders ****ed up 10 spaces in the hotel lot for their lack of consideration for others. I'm not downing the people who trailered their car as I trailered mine. I parked my truck and trailer in a useless gr***/dirt area between two businesses so I wouldn't infringe on those who needed hotel parking space. Everyone should be gauranteed one space in the parking lot for each room they are renting at the hotel.
Logicly though when one stumbles upon a chair in a spot you really don't know if the person hasn't arrived yet OR if they went out for a cruz.
That is the point of the editorial. As I stated I understand at the show once you're there and you want to cruise like Denise but saving them at a hotel is BS. As far a Justin's concert, how could you not go!
if you got that many guys in a club, it isn't very hard to park a few cars all caddywompus and take up the additional space. Now the goober who wants to park in a that particular space...I haven't seen to many people who will back into someone standing in a space. to the *****led toed *** pirates who put lawn chairs out to save spots: this is a car show, not a chair show. go call the queer eye guys for a chair show.
No one will ever win this battle. Remember everyone has an ***hole, just in some people its a bigger part of them.
At the GG West Coast Nats I got in line at 3:30am at the Rose Ave gate and there were cars in line covered. Owners back at the rooms until 5am. Get there early like all the rest of us.
In my bunch, if someone breaks we stay & fix it. If someone is running a little late or wants to go cruise, we will just move a car or two to save their spot. The only place I've ever waited in line at 3am was at a strip club... & even that was stupid & not worth it. Want to see gold chain, "my club is better than yours", street rodder mentality at it's WORST? Arrive at Shades of the Past around 7am on Friday hoping to park somewhere relatively close to restrooms, food, & the swap meet. You'll be greeted by acres (literally) of tents & yellow tape without a car in sight. These are chunks of land big enough to park a dozen or more cars and twice as many fat ***es under the tents. I wonder what they would do if I rolled in on Wednesday around noon & roped off the whole first row? Aw hell, who am I kidding? I'd probably be too late. I've never run into a problem with people saving spots in a hotel parking lot. JH
Last show I went to with buddies, we had 3 10x10 tents tied together and probably 12 trucks. We popped the tents up, pulled the trucks up so the beds were under the tents and sat on the rails of the truck. That took as little room as possible and talk about fun! That **** was a blast.
Goodguys implemented a policy this year of no saving spaces until after 10:00am. That way the one guy in the group of 15 can't get there and save a whole row for his lazy friends. It's hard to enforce, but there are guys set on the task each day. Then after 10:00 you can cruise or whatever and know that you're spot will be there when you get back. If you aren't at a car show until after 10:00am you should expect to have a pretty limited choice of spots.
Living in louisville we see the best or the worst every year for the nats, some local guys who do not own rods park at the executive hotel on monday in a late model, leave it there so they can hang out all weekend,
Yes ... you would be too late. I have been there on Tuesday and the power parkers were already there.
