I was watching a show on Sunday afternoon called Cook's Country, and they showed how to
make fried chicken that was crispier than KFC crispy chicken...it was unbelievable. I had to try
it the next day and it's the only recipe I use now. It's got to be at least 2X crispier than KFC.
Just talking about it makes me hungry again...heading to the store.

You guys should probably know that Popeyes chicken is way better than KFC.

Popeyes chicken sandwich is really good too.
Since we now have Popeyes here, KFC is history. :D

I worked at KFC one summer in high school...here's what I learned...

KFC is deep fried in high pressure cookers

When frying chicken thighs, you must break the thigh joint or it will act like a "heat sink" and leave meat only partially cooked (good to know)

The gravy base is made from the "cracklings"...the crud that settles in the bottom of the pressure cookers.

We sent a sample of the secret 11 herbs & ****es to a friend in Cornell's chemistry dept. for ****ysis...they could only identify 8 of them...(kinda scary)

The caustic nature of the cooking oil would rot the soles off your shoes in less than a month.

    Happy eatin' folks

I really surprised that this thread is still up; first post had a pic with a Model A and all the rest has been about food? I posted but thought this thread would be taken down. It's weird how some stuff that it OT is allowed and other stuff let's deleted in a nano second...

OK, to keep it on topic, I worked at KFC in 64. We did deliveries, the two rides for that were a 55 Ford Crown Vic with a plexigl*** roof, and a 55 Chev Handyman. they were not treated too well. AND, I cooked a lot of chicken.

I don't know what Elmer did to this thing... but it's hot as a fryer and she's got steam like a pressure cooker!

Growing up, our Colonel Sanders was at the east end of a major cruise route, right in between a gas station and a liquor store. It also had a large parking area so there was usually a few local hot rods there.

  16. I posted this on another thread, but it really belongs here.
I actually met the Colonel Sanders in 1962, (I think, but it could have been later), when he was promoting his first out of country franchise in Vancouver BC.
I was working part time in the hotel where he was staying for the week he was in Vancouver doing promotions. I was a bellman in the hotel where he was staying, and he was friendly and great to talk to. He was quite a character, and he always dressed just the way it showed on the commercials.
At the time, I thought he had always had a successful franchise operation, and did not know that his true success story began after he retired.
    Edit:
Here is an informative bio on him:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonel_Sanders

BTW: There was a deep fried fish and chips restaurant where I live on Vancouver Island, and Bud the owner, used the pressure cooker method to deep fry the fish. Damn it was good.

The photo (in the OP) of the Colonel with a '30 Model A Ford Coupe was taken in 1955 ... to commemorate Harland Sanders move to a Corbin, Kentucky gas station that planted the seeds of what eventually became Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Sanders had run both a successful tire business and a high volume gas station in Nicholasville, Kentucky that he had turned around from money loser to selling between fifteen to eighteen thousand gallons of gas a month, more than any other station in that part of the country:

    Harland Sanders Shell Station.jpg

When the Depression hit and wiped out his business, Sanders recovered with an offer from Shell Oil. They'd noticed his record and gave him the gas station franchise in Corbin, Kentucky to work his magic on it.

It started out as "Sanders Court" which was a gas station-restaurant combination in 1930 and by 1938 he'd added a motel and it was a well known establishment and highly rated in the travel guides.

Here's another pic from that 1955 photo shoot:

Over the years, the photo in the OP was used in print Ads ... like this one:

  20. Unfortunately, the fish place closed in the 1990s, because the property was developed into a mall. It was a drive in, but had a couple of tables. They offered both cod and halibut at the time. There was always a long line of people picking up dinner. You had to order early.
There is currently another fish and chips place in town, and they also use the pressure cookers to cook the fish. You can order take-out, but we always eat in.

Right behind the Fairgrounds in Louisville, there’s a carpet store that has a giant adverti*****t for the all-you-can-eat KFC buffet plastered on one of the outside walls. Every year, I threaten my co-workers that we’re going to have a company dinner there, but it never ends up happening. Coincidentally, I spotted this very on-topic truck across the street from the aforementioned sign.
