man i really need to get some better welding protection! I really want avoid all these horrible burns.
last week i was tig welding on a ch***is from underneith. My tig rod was red hot, it dropped, went red side down straight to my side through my shirt, i went to grab it and gave it an accidental shove, which then made it go sideways into my skin about 3/4 of an inch., left a nice black coterized hole.. the tig rod was pretty thick =\
Well, i have to say i personally have experienced most of the burns on this thread...seem kinda funny now, but not so much when you are the one dancing/burning/cursing! Here is the topper though.........went to the dentist for cleaning/ checkup. had not been in a while and the hygenist was doing her thing when she stops cold.. gets another nurse to look in my mouth, says Mr. Lewis, are you aware that 1 of your teeth is rusting ?? gets a mirror and sure enough....inside of one of my front teeth has a ball of mig spatter stuck to it! plastic cap that i forgot i even had.. she picked it out and polished the tooth right up. lesson learned...close your mouth when you are tacking under the car.. dave ;-)
When I was going to tech. school in MPLS a kid in a welding booth a few rows down was doing some spray arc welding with a really heavy duty wirefeed machine. He was going to tack weld a few pieces together before he started welding. When he started getting into a good pace he kinda quit being careful and put the wire through his glove. I mean through one side of a finger and out the other. The wire went in through his glove, then his finger nail and then back out the other side of his glove. He told me he had to clip the wire in order to get his hand out of the glove.
Tig welding has faults as well. Getting a shock, dropping the torch, having it swing down and stick in the nether region. It burns thru pants and undies,, the tungsten cauterizes itself in, and the cup will usually burn a ring around it,, then you get to yank it back out. Or having the filler rod touching behind you,, if you stick it to the tungsten it gets red hot, right now. Can't drop it fast enough.
O/A burns (2nd and 3rd degree) across the middle, ring and pinky fingers on my right hand. Just wasn't paying attention. I haven't burned myself since. It only hurt for a split second, and then nothing, until it started healing.
