A few years ago I purchased a collection of early flathead magnetos and ignitions and this ignition was part of the collection. I know there are parts missing but supposedly this ignition is for an early flathead and was made by Kong Jackson. I really don't know anything about this particular ignition and I am looking for any information anyone here would have on it. What you see pictured here is all that I have. I don't know if this was a prototype that was never finished or was completed and parts were lost over time. If anyone can shed some light on this piece it would be greatly appreciated. It would also be nice if I could find someone to complete this ignition and get it into operating condition.
It has the flavor of a Roto-Faze, but enough differences to be not the same. It looks like it might mount off the front of a SBC cam, onto an aluminum chain cover where you might put the Hilborn pump.
Thanks for your comment Alchemy! I posted on another site and one man thought this distributor may have been designed for an 8BA flathead. I really don't know. If anyone else has an idea of the application, I would be quite interested. I know Kong Jackson and his brother were heavily involved in racing and developing racing parts.
Man, those last 4 photos lead me to believe that particular Roto Faze was in & out of an engine multiple times during its race days & maybe rattled around a toolbox as well, must have served the owner well to have survived.
Not for an 8BA as they were made from the factory with a front cover with a housing to accept the shaft. No need to recreate it.
Not intended for a Flathead. The 3-hole mounting pattern on the back side matches the pattern used by Hilborn timing covers for a cam-driven fuel pump. A "spud" that is bolted to the front of the cam would then engage the hex in the angle drive. I suspect the top may have accepted something based on a Roto-Faze and was subsequently being converted to some sort of magnetic pickup. The label looks 1970s or later, which post-dates the "Championship Model" type ignition for the Flatheads by a good 20-30 years.
In Retson's picture from January 4th, I've seen one of those setups before, and a box of the gears that run off the cam nut. I missed out on purchasing it, so I don't know where they ended up. The timing cover is obviously Model A, and those are around. The other bracket that looks like a big rocker arm is to mount Kong distributors to the Model A on top of they cylinder head, mounts to two cylinder head bolts. I have pictures of one using a Tempest distributor (I think it's Tempest).
Would you by any chance have more knowledge on Kong parts or those pictures? I would love to pick your brain if possible!
I have pictures of the two timing covers, front and side. I have pictures of the other style distributor mount you have that looks like a rocker. I just don’t have the front cover distributor mount or the gears. I looked and couldn’t find and pictures of those. I’ll post the other ones in the morning.
