Mark, that one is from a boat, specifically, a 14' Crestliner Mustang circa 1960-62 and possibly other models. I spent many hours in a 62 as a kid, similar to this one.

upload_2024-9-10_3-29-5.png Nice old friend from the teenage years

    Hello,

For the years my brother gave me a ride in his “new” 58 Impala, that steering wheel always called my name. One day, I would get to drive the Impala and perhaps own it as my own teenage car. But, that day was still way down the line. I was happy to arrive in my young days being dropped off in a nice, shiny black Impala that I had just washed and cleaned up. (Or a just finished a nice Cadillac Blue Coral Wax job.)

My brother always said he was busy. But, that if I wanted to be taken to basketball practice or a friend’s house, I would have to walk or clean his Impala. Well, that was no contest for a young impressionable kid. Break out the hose, chamois skin and shade. Ha! I was the only one to arrive in a nice shiny black 58 Impala in those days. He did not tell me that our mom and dad told him to take me where I wanted or needed to be. Our mom did not drive back then and the Buick sedans were away at work.

Older brothers were usually smart and played right into the “game,” set up as a mom and dad thing. Sure, he would take me places. But, first… our folks never knew what my brother’s game was, ever. I did not complain as I was able to be dropped off, arriving in a shiny, powerful 58 Chevy Impala.

I did spend time behind the wheel many times thinking ahead to my own teenage driving times. So, that view out of the front windshield was familiar from the fall of 1957 to the full ownership name list in 1961, to the last images of the Impala in 1965.

The only thing I did to improve the view was to place a small lit up aircraft, calibrated tachometer over to the side to view through the wheel openings. No huge chrome tach was going to be drilled into the dash at any time or place. YRMV
upload_2024-9-10_3-35-44.png What happened to the automatic shift pattern? The C&O Stick Hydro had its own pattern and I had to learn each place with the stick shift column shifter in its proper place. At first, it was hectic. Later on, it was as if it were a factory stock item for shifting. When my friend drove it, I had to show him the pattern. Also, not like the Powerglide or regular Oldsmobile patterns.

'58 Edsel Teletouch. Interesting part is there's no hub, so I'll have to come up with one. I've got the pushbutton shifter center, but probably won't use it. This is for my avatar someday....

Winfield used one of these on the original Jade Idol and installed some faux gauges in the center.

  20. I saved this interesting steering wheel pix in my stash a long time ago. It is captioned as "Mooneyes450" but I don't see anything like it on their site. I think that I may have thought that it was a new piece that was available and not an old, refurbished survivor so that's maybe why I saved the photo. (?)

    Edit: Found it!.........

    Beautiful Lucite wheel, but it’s a ‘61.

A ‘38 Studebaker banjo with a ‘34 Stude President horn button. I rolled a smaller rim for it. The banjo ‘strings’ are unique, and why I chose to use the wheel for my Model A.

    Hello,

After the multiple driver’s education movies and scare tactics of the teacher, we all knew the risks. But, at the time, no one we knew had ever been in front end collision where a car ended up in a tree or solid wall. The early movies showed us that the steering wheel and column would not be a friend in a front end collision. As awful as those movies and photos showed, we still wanted to drive those Chevy sedans as it was our steps to “teenage freedom…” ha!

Even 65 years later we still do not know anyone hitting a wall or tree, directly. So, those movies were scary, but until collapsible steering columns came into the automobile scene and we never saw the results of such wreck, it was just a part of the whole learning process. Who could not want or like to be behind the steering wheel of any car from a black 37 Chevy sedan clunker sedan to a fast hot rod 34 Ford coupe with a powerful Oldsmobile motor? Steering wheels were just a part of the program.

Somehow, the 58 Impala seemed safer than the Flathead 40 Ford Sedan Delivery when driving them around.
    upload_2024-9-11_4-15-57.png
But, there was more car in front of the steering wheel. But, I can't imagine what it would have been like with a Moon 4 spoke steering wheel in a 40 Willys Coupe hitting a tree, car or wall... Yikes...

    Note:

When my wife was looking for a new daily driver, we drove in plenty of different models, we liked. No USA cars, but there was one model that had our sales guy telling me to turn into a driveway parking lot and go to the end of the lot, facing the solid wall. I thought it was a parking spot for our test model. But, he kept insisting to continue driving ahead. I saw a red flexible traffic pole on a black stand just a few feet from the block wall.

He said to keep going. I wanted to stop, but he insisted. By the time we got to the red pole on a black stand, the car stopped by itself. Both my wife and I were bracing our selves in the front seats. Me grabbing the steering wheel and she was bracing herself on the dash handles.

Now, the sales guy was all smiles and then explained the factory built in stopping power without driver’s added support. The front end camera sensors saw an item and just before stopping a few feet away, stopped the car with a strong braking action.

We bought a different make, test model from another dealer. The old folks feel safer, already… YRMV
