Krylon Rattle Can Flake

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 3spd, Jan 13, 2012.

  1. i saw it at hobby lobby at the time they were running a 40%off sale on krylon so i bought one of almost every color BIG FUCKIN MISTAKE the nozzle glogs almost instantly and somehow cause the can to not close after you let go of the nozzle so all the propellant continues to spray out until its empty this happened on all but one can i bought i managed to get some of them to stop but not all

the one can that worked the shit comeout sooo thick it will hide anykind of small details (i bought some to paint the 32 ford im gonna build for the next model buildoff ) it is deffinatly NOT for small items its almost like baby powder coming out of the can

dupli color 's metal flakes work ok but the nozzle tends to clog up also and as was stated i wish it had bigger flakes in it

I want to use some of this stuff. So the Krylon gums up the nozzle quick? I dont know where i could find plastikote brand stuff at other than the engine paints they sell. I want to paint the lightening holes sleeves in my frame glitter green. I saw the roth metal flake spray paints on here, those seem really cool. but i wonder if they clog up the nozzles too? That and a 12oz can is $19

    I had the same problem!

I painted a set of wheels with the Silver Specks and it turned out looking no different than metallic paint. After paying over $11 a can and spending hours getting the wheels down to bare steel the result was very disappointing.

Also the tip kept clogging. I have used many Dupli-Color products in the past and the Metal Specks was the only one that I had problems with.

After reading this post awhile back, I went with wifey-poo to Hobby Lobby. They had about 12 colors of that flake paint.

I bought a can of the cherry bomb red.

So i had this old toy dumptruck, and let my kid tear it down and turn into a hauler for our other toys.

He flaked the cab, and after alot of clear, it turned out pretty good. Considering we didnt really prep at all.
Takes alot of clear to bury flake tho.

Hard to get decent pics with crappy cell phone but.... I'll take better pics in better light once he puts it back together.

it not what you think as a model car builder the stuff in ok if you airbrush a color thats close first ..the stuff in very thing almost like water and runs very east .. think of it as a clear with green flakes added .. never had much luck with it

I've found that paints like these benefit from sitting in real hot water for 10 min or so before spraying. Lot less clogging. Shake hell out of it too.

The guys in my shop use a baby bottle warmer to keep spray paint warm in our coolish shop.

    Yes to being real thin
    yes to clogging tip
    Yes to running easy

My 15yr old son is the spray bomb king and he fought it alot. He wasnt thrilled but the color is great. He shot a cherry red base down first also.

May try the sit in warm water trick since we have 1 can left.

Im going to try the Plastikote brand of green flake and clear on some pieces of pipe in my garage laying around to see what happens. I want to paint the inside of my speed holes in my frame. I was told that engine paint works great because its hard to make run.

Slate metallic, is that like a greyish silver? I was going to spray some metallic silver then the Duplicolor metal specs green

-Edit- I see slate metallic is a dark grey color. I was hoping a bright silver would make the green brighter after it goes on. I dunno, i'm no painter!

Does the duplicolor spray out in a big fan style or more controlled? I bought some krylon green just to try and it sprays out in a huge fan style, good for covring large things but not for small stuff.

  19. I think with a spray can tip it's also going to be tough not to get streaks when painting big areas with it. If they have that fan shape tip that's usually a little better.

  20. killa fab the slate metallic color i used is alight very metallic silvery color its also from a dupli-color can

the green sprays out in a fan when im spraying small items like the 1/25 scale 32 ford hood/body i just hold the can back farther and kinda mist it till i get the color i want if you hold the can too close YOU WILL run it and it will build up around ridges and thin out on edges

the color is very changeable depending on what color you spray it over even diffent colors primer will change it

i got a model of a 57 ford i sprayed with the slate color ill post a pic of it later tonight

  21. heres a couple pics of my 57 ford model i sprayed with the slate color i mentioned

Picked up 2 different krylon glitters last night at Michaels. And together they look awesome! Metallic silver Rustoleum base, then the lucky green glitter blast, then a little of the green glitter spray and it looks like candy green to me.

[IMG] The green to the far left is what i sprayed on top of the lucky green glitter blast. Heated both cans up in front of a space heater for a few mins and sprayed fine.

Does look cool! I might paint my welding helmet candy green. What grit sand paper did you use to scuff up the helmet before paint? Any sanding after primer or base? I ask only because i'm no painter and havent much clue on it.

I bought some more of the lucky green glitter blast and it sucked. But i put it in a pot hot water on the stove for a minute to two and they will work but only briefly. Then you have to shake the shit out of em and it will spray good for about another 30 seconds. Apparently the process for using this crap involves boiling water, shaking, spray, and repeat.

and my camera on my phone apparently sucks at capturing good colors
