hey ya'll, plug: SEM vinyl dye

    into google.com - interesting stuff.

hmn, the stuff ya use to restore or change the color of old vinyl... vinyl paint I've heard it called. A pal of mine used it or something very similiar to fix up the faded out dash in his '68 fairlane.

SEM is made right here in Charlotte NC, been using it for years to change color on seats, headliners, etc. In a nutshell, I don't know how it would work on tires, but its killer **** on upholstery. Most good auto paint shops have it.

  5. It's a very good vinyl dye in spray cans. It really sticks good on vinyl. In 3 years the black never wore off some tan seats i dyed and it always has a very natural look. Anyway, i thought with the flexing agent in this stuff if it would work better on a tire that flexes around a lot. We got a saying around here-Hey, can't see it from my house. In other words, if it looks OK, then it looks OK. PS-I'm the self professed Krylon King of Sun Valley

I have seen the Plymouth in OSR with painted whitewalls in person... It looks pretty darn good... I didn't even realize that they were painted until he pointed it out. They were done a few years ago and still held up good.

When I was 16 I wanted a set of those yellow accell plugs wires on my 67 Mustang. I didn't have the money for the wires, but I did have .79 cents....

There were two problems though, the paint wouldn't dry (it probably still isn't), and I had no idea what a 'firing order' was at the time so the car wouldn't start after I put the wires back on.

Finally had to call a friend that was a car guy. He's probably still laughing at me.

I was getting ready to delete all the drama posts in this thread, but decided to leave them as an example of sorts.

Opinions are cool... Bashing others to express yours is pretty childish.

    Carry on.

One final post on this thread............I have read posts by long timers that have been rather ignorant as well as extremely informative, and I have read posts by complete newbies that have really taught this 61 year old geezer a thing or too. So, drop the damn post and duration **** and enjoy this forum as I have learned to do, cause in my opinion we are all in this hobby for the same reasons..........longevity of the sport. Oh, by the way, I think I will go out in the garage and rattle can something.just cause I can. Another thought, who has guts enough to try this tire coloring method with other colors??????????????? God, ain't it fun. (Damn, I typed a whole paragraph and didn't piss anyone off.....I'm gettin' better).

Oops, sorry... He actually used regular old Krylon.... Not the fusion plastic paint... Semi-gloss works best. The car itself was pretty neat too.

My Universals haven't, of course every time I wash my car I scrub the tires down with Wesley's Bleach White (not sure of spelling)... using this makes the tires look like new, although I have a feeling I am rubbing the sidewall white thin in some places... but they look new as of date. Of course, i do have a slight crack or two in the white itself, on the older pair... nothing of major importance, maybe two nickle size spots... but it is merely cosmetic and I attribute it to natural aging of 5 year old tires....

Those sidewalls are at least 1/8" thick... I wouldn't worry about rubbing them too thin!
Thanks for the info, $120 each is a kick *** price.

I was wondering how to mask a perfect circle and then I read this and think to myself..DUHHH..Why didnt I think of that. I'm going to try the grinding method since I have New tires with the thin white wall (came on the car when I bought it). If it dont work out to my satisfaction im going to try the the paint method. Sure does beat spending 600+ on tires when I already have new ones. When these wear out I might spring for some www radials. When i get this done I will post up my results and feedback

I agree with the painting method, may try it. I heard somewhere( maybe true, maybe not), that grinding weakens the sidewall. Just a thought. Rather put my 2cents than hear about someone having a blowout.

I used SEM today for the first time on some Upholstery. As soon as I read teh can, I thought "Hey, I wonder how this would work on tires?" Anyone want to give it a go and tell us how it works?

I painted some tires when I was truly low on money. I used Rustoleum in a can. It looked good for a while, but I live in the city, and for most people, we park on the street. That means parallel parking.

Now, I will content that I may, in fact, be one of the best parallel parkers on the planet (gotta be good at something), but sidewalls get scuffed.

After a while, my painted tires looked AWFUL, which was somehow appropriate for the Clubbed Wagoon rattletrap.

I saved up some money and bought some medium whitewall radials (chrome reverse wheels, 60s vibe) for about $50 each.

And then I sold the truck, which was really the best way to go in the end. :)

OK heres the third installment of this post!!lol
I couldn't find another can of fusion white anywhere!!!(WTF, i figured all you NE HAMBers ran out & bought them up!!) So i got a can of Rusto Plastic paint .I ran a br*** brush over the tire that was flaking & suprisingly it didn't all come off!! Then i cleaned it again& sprayed away, i left it jacked up & tomorrow morning i'll spay it again. When i get home i'll take it out & let ya know what happen & i'll give it a comparison test to the Krylon.
Also where do you buy the "SEM" dye?
To answer the question about getting a nice smooth edge on the WWW, almost every tirehas some kind of groove or mark on the edge to go by, look close & you'll see it.

I always wondered whether that would work. Never had the balls to try it.... But I think I will now!!
I guess you could use Acetone or Thinner to clean the side walls too??

Check out Bugmans Tech Video he made during Tech Week. In his Video he shows a cut away section of a thin white wall tire. The the black rubber covering the white underneath is VERY thin. Isn't enough to cause a problem. theres alot of meat under there. Check out that Video its great. Here's the link

If you're paying for ****, you aren't looking hard enough.

I'm always on teh cheap, so grinding and/or painting is much preferred to buying WWWs. If I ever build a truly show worthy car, I'll buy whites, but for drivers, cheaper is better(and will be more so once the Hemi's in and I chew through rear tires once a month :) )

Looks great, by the way Johnnie Rocka, who ran the Iron Horse Pro-Mod '49 Merc, painted his white walls on to complete a near 200 MPH p*** (from what I remember, this was a long time ago). Any white wall looks cool, no matter how much the white wall cost, after all, its all about the metal, not billet....

this thread is really old i see, but i am about to go paint some junk tires to see if it works, but i'd like someone insight from you guys, the ones that have tried it.

how long did it take until the tires started cracking/ turning yellow/ so bad that they needed touching up?

and i read what u guys used to prep before painting them, but what should i use to clean the tire before painting? sand it down with sandpaper, wipe it off with a cloth, mineral oil.. or what?? just need some help in that area to i guess
