I was told by a guy thats been around forever that he used to do the same **** back in the 50's. He didnt have the money to spend on new WW's so he painted em about every 6 months. You gotta do what you gotta do, no need to bash! Not everybody has the big bucks for their hot rod.

I painted the WW's on mine, didnt have the cash to spend on new ones at the time. I did the same method with maskin em off and using the Krylon Fusion. I guess I did mine at the wrong time when it was too cold, or did it wrong because it flaked off. O well it looked kinda cool after it flaked off so I said screw it and left it!

To post yet another reply, I just completed the tires on my 51 bullet nose Stude, using the white wall tire paint from Iceland. 20 bucks , 20 bucks air mail for up to 4 pints. Two pints do 4 tires 3 coats with half a pint left over. Paint a coat, wait 24 hours and repeat. I did mine on the rims at operating pressure per instructions. Taped the tire and rim and just cut on the tape line to remove the tape after it is cured. I didn't sand the lettering off. First coat I brushe, rolled the next two. Looks very nice when finished. Search my other threads. If ya want acloser picture PM me. I too didn't want to spend the bucks cause I already had the tires.

ok,here's how we stop all the bickering and name calling and put this to rest as either a true method or not.EVERYONE who has painted your tires take PICTURES of them CLOSE UP and let us see how well they've held out.i know some guys posted this tech up MONTHS AGO so their tires should be showing SOME age right now, whether it be the sidewalls or not.we can talk till we're blue in the face, but a picture's worth a thousand words.also for you nonbelievers,i'm sure you've got at least ONE junk tire sittin around.pay a few bucks for a can of fushion and try it on one of them for yourselves and SEE what it'll do.if you read the sunday paper, micheals arts and crafts usually puts out a 40% off coupon every week and if all yer buyin is one can that knocks the price down a bit.plus if ya dont decide to use it,you can spray yer dirty lawn furniture with it or somethin :D i tried it myself on a tire i found by a dumpster with ONE CAN and it looked decent even if not masked off.i'm personally runnin portawalls, but if i werent,i'd paint the tires in a second.get some cheap $35 tires and paint em and at the end of the season buy new ones.cheap tires should be replaced sooner anyways.so i hope to see some PIX UP SOON cuz i know yall got PLENTY of cars runnin painted whites.personally,i just wanna see the difference between painted with fushion or REGULAR krylon..seems like fushion would work better to me..

as u can see in the first 2 pics i dont think that is supposed to happen..... ****

and i didnt sand down the side of the tire because 1. its a test tire, 2. didnt have the time, and 3. i wanted to see how it'd look with the letters left on there

I did mine over the summer to a set of tires I had....Krylon Fusion. I don't remember seeing a GLOSS or PRIMER...I just bought White. My prep skills were lacking, so I didn't clean them with brakleen, or sand them. I just cleaned them off real well. The first tire I did bubbled up just like that in the pic. The rest of the tires I used Brakleen and they worked great. Still no sanding.

Let them completely dry before doing another coat, but that bubbling will cover right up.

As far as how long they last....it really depends on the tire. I did it to a set of Mickey Thompson Sportsmans.....they're pretty oily. The brown started to show through after about a week. I just painted them again. For a few bucks a can....who cares really how many times you paint them. It is paint, so you have to understand that they're not gonna last forever...and they're not going to survive curbs and rubbing. Just take some time and make a template out of posterboard that you can lay over the wheel, and one over the outside diameter of the tire...then tape it up. If you have to re-paint them often, this will save some time.

OK i'll jump in here since I started the post awhile ago.
I painted the tires & the front ones where tires i had on awhile, over the years i used stuff to make them look good ( armorall, yada) Well they looked good till i rolled with them, they started cracking right away!! I tried cleaning them with everything under the sun & they still cracked.
the back ones on the other hand really didn't have any "shine" stuff put to them so they held up alot better!!! BUT.............. They turned yellow!! big time.
I finally ended up grinding the whites into WWW, its not as easy as it looks but its not rocket science either, results are much better.
Sorry i didn't get to here earlier to save yas some time ,but i was being a winter slug & sitting around watching twilight zone marathons. But i hate to say it cause this thread got into some ugly **** but its not worth painting...
    Go with grinding them

your reply basically answered what i needed, about the bubbling and such. all i did was take a wash cloth with water and wiped it down clean, but didnt try the brake kleen stuff, shoulda tried it though, and i took the tape off which i shouldnt have done cuz it took about 45 minutes to get that on there... damn, im gonna have to make a template like u said.

well i posted something on a myspace group and they said just save up ur money and get Coker's, but hear bad stuff about those tires, like they wear out easily and arent with the money.... that competing with spray painting your tires every so often to keep up the good look. thanks for ur reply though it summed up what i needed

its alright about the late reply, some paint remover and gasoline should take care of that tire and restore it back to the way it was, *i need to give it back to my dad its off his '63 ranchero*

ya i saw that grinding video... looks pretty unsafe though, one bad grind and its right through the rubber and u lost a tire... i guess i ought to save up my money and just BUY a set of real white walls. i dont wanna yellow wall tires lol... and i read the posts in this topic, ya it was pretty bad a while back i guess

ok, just to chime in all whiney like i have been.i'd STILL do this method (or portawalls again for that matter) instead of buying real whites for 2 reasons: 1.cost and 2. peace of mind.i drive my car.a lot.i park it outside my apartment complex.to date it has had the tires slashed once.with portawalls i just popped em off the MONTH OLD TIRES and put a new set on and even put the slashed ports back on.the same'd be true with krylon whites.it's not rocket science.and even if i have to spend a whopping $35 for ONE extra tire to practice on,it'd be worth it to me.i remember the RAGE i felt when i'd realized someone had slashed my tires and i cant imagine the feeling i'd get if someone had done that to a new set of cokers!to me there's more important stuff for me to spend my money on with my ride and anyone who cares should be lookin at someone else's car. just my 2 cents

I've painted blackwalls with Krylon white and the results were breathtaking. It even came out whiter than real whitewalls, and it never cracked.

By the way, if anyone knows where to get Krylon cans in Belgium please PM me!

Nobody listens to the ***UMED rich California guys !!!!

there is no subs***ute for a REAL WHITE WALL TIRE !!!!! PERIOD !

port o walls are the only alternitive.... but the roll up when ya spin the tires & dont work real well with radials (but i never run either)

ues yer HOT RODDER resources and just get real whites

seen at the swap cheap.. either good used, bought the wrong ones, HELL i bought a set of 14" SLIVERTOWN BFG bias thick whites... 100 MILES ON EM at the trire store cus a buy bought a T-BIRD with them on it and had to have radials ......... for $100.00

  21. DESOTO---don't get so bent out of shape raggin on the guy!!! I run Coker wide whites, but when I was much, much younger, I painted the whitewalls onto a 52 Chev. They looked nice for the first 1/2 hour.---till I drove it to town. Nobody WANTS to run out and spend a bunch of money when MAYBE, just MAYBE they can get away with a cheaper method.

ive run both true www's, and krylon. the www's looked much better, but as was stated earlier, i use bleach white and a br*** brush on 'em everytime i wash, if not they get nasty yellow. the krylons just wash off with a little soap, and a green pad. although to me they dont look as good as true www's i like either way. did you grind them down with a DA, or have them shaved in the end?

Cars and tires are like ***s.............everyone likes some thing different. Personally i like the real deal whities but the spray looks mighty fine to me. I guess as stated before............what ever fits your budget and makes you happy.

Heck the poor mans hot rod often has much more thought and creativity than the big coin car. But i like them both.......for what they are, hot rods.

Remember, ***s or tires theres bound to be trouble.

But, i think the degree of bashing is uncalled for. Members are people and have feelings as well. And for those who wanta bash my thoughts on how we treat other members......(edited by myself;))

Okay, guys...De Soto has spoken. NO more beer cans for radiator overflow catch-cans, Buy the real thing, factory made. And, no more rattle can paint jobs or touch-ups, you can afford a real paint gun and compressor from now on. And no more Mexican blankets just thrown over the old seat, you need an upholsterer to sew that up right. There's gonna be some more minimum standards imposed shortly, so stay in touch. "IF ya got enogh dough to build or buy any old ROD or Kustom .... you can afford to have (fill in the blank here with factory made regulation part)." This ain't from me, this is from De Soto. Hell, I'm just an FNG.
