Amen! I believe the Shoebox business and club coupes dont need to be chopped. Ford got it right

 

Someone 'splain to me that as lot of work goes into custom cars to "smooth" them out -- why do some Mercury owners leave this no-value "paper clip"?

 

Probably because if you are starting with a car with good paint and it is going to be a mild custom it is a lot easier to paint one small area from removing the door handles that doesn't have to be a dead on match to anything else because it is not right beside anything in the same colour compared to having to match, repaint or blend blend three panels on both sides of the car if you removed it.

 

That is a 52-54 Merc, Ford. The as you call it paper clip came on 55-56 Mercs. The front section has cut outs for door handles. So, two more rear sections are needed to complete the paper clip.
