That looks like Ralph Testa's Merc. It was indeed restored, and won out over the restored Hirohata Merc
    at the Amelia Concours!

  7. Man, you're not kidding @Sancho. Almost the exact same front end right down to the Olds frown grille and '49 Plymouth bumper. Great looking cars! Makes you wonder why more people don't do similar quads on more customs.
Earlier this year I was at a pick 'n' pull junk yard and there was an Olds in there with the frown grille still in it. It was complete and the chrome was still pretty nice. Not all out show car nice but above average nice driver condition. I kick myself for not buying it. Oh well..........

I think a lot of folks are off today for the upcoming holiday or something. This thread is really buzzing along this morning! E

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how much work the owner of this '58 Ford had to do to use the '59 Pontiac tail lights. The trunk lid on a '59 Pontiac is pretty much "pancaked" from the factory and the taillights were one piece. This guy had to cut them so that one side would open with the trunk lid, and the other half stayed stationary on the car. I'd love to get a closer look at this car and see how he sealed the lights after the modifications. Super nice work!

I've been noticing that many of the cars being posted on this awesome thread are from the east coast. Say what you want, but you have to admit the east coast guys are putting out some incredible customs these days! Gotta love it! E

Always heard them referred to as "waterall" grille, although "frown" is a pretty accurate name. Those things are a bear to get off of a car in the yard unless the front bumper is off, the bumper tucks in under that bottom lip piece like 8 inches, I pulled one out of a local yard a couple weeks ago and while I did get it, it was a real bitch.

I've recently found out about a few local, private junkyard stashes and I've been spending all my spare time and money harvesting parts, trying to save what can be saved, and have found quite a few custom related pieces.

Well this is all I could come up with for a estimate for that job, going by my 1953 Chilton's flat rate manual, couldn't find anything for just removing the grill only...sorry[IMG][IMG][IMG]

In the illustration above, that ribbed piece in between the bumper uprights, that's the piece that tucks back in over the lower grille bar, and it goes way, way in, which is weird because it's not visible that far in. And you really want to get that lower pan piece, some are steel and some are die cast but for most custom applications you will use it.
