I have always been a fan of the red Chevy hardtop. The wheel opening treatment is pure genius.

That Desoto would have great potential if you put about 3 inches back into the top!! Someone going for the WOW LOOK AT ME!!! style. Way to much chop , totally lost the flow . To bad , I really would like to see more well done dare to be different customs. Larry

This body line treatment gives such a natural fender fade-away appearance,
it's a wonder I've never seen it used before. And just when you think you've seen it all...

Ralph Schindel built this Merc out of a used up parts car. It was sitting in a salvage waiting to be smashed and
he saved it. The guy thought he was nuts working on such a ruff Merc but he showed him that its just metal and
everything can be fixed... You're right the fade worked out great. The reason for the fade away is the back of the Merc was all scratch built out of flat metal. Ralph was a real craftsman and enjoyed driving his Merc every where at anytime.

Here is a in progress picture of his Merc. What a lot of work.

Personally, the white T-Bird is not much of a "kustom," looks bone-stock to me... would like to see more of the '55...

  8. That 55 t bird was perfect....the stance, the mild custom work, the wires, the beautiful tan leather...just a really nicely done car

I was commenting on the WHITE T-bird, I don't feel it's a "kustom"...not the '55 T-Bird, altho I could see how my comment about the '55 could be misunderstood...I actually meant the '55 Chevy...

Love the side trim. The only thing that I don't care for is the wheels.

Yeah, never was a fan of those wheels either...they don't fit a fifties kustom...

Thanks for posting this Mick. I met Ralph at the 2000 Leadsleds in Wichita. Such a nice person and a true custom guy. I was really bummed when he passed away.
One day last week I was at work just working away and Ralph popped into my head. In my mind's eye I was curious what happened to the car since he has left us. Did someone in his family take over and is hopefully still cruising it around, or did Mama Schindel pass it on to the next caretaker? It was always one of my favorites.

Also, in a few of the pictures you posted, I think I see Frank Lund's '60 Impala in the background. Man, that guy got (gets) around. I miss seeing him around Denver since he moved out to the "Kanorado Plains". Everytime I see him he tells me I need to stop in Burlington and check out his museum. I really do need to do that. Time just has a knack for getting away..........E

thanks for your posts loveoftiki. Sorry I won't attend the show this year. But I like what I see in your posts more than what I am seeing in the Great 8 this year.

The Frank Sonzogni Merc sure looks different without the side trim.

Is the sectioned shoebox coupe an Valley Customs car. I always liked that treatment on 49-51 Ford's.

Awesome cars there!!! But what's up with the caddy grille, is it just the angle or something different going on with it? Any other shots?

  27. It's real fine bar grille. The lighting and reflections off the bumper make it look weird. Here's a different angle I found on the web.....
