History Kustoms of America - At The Beginning?

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Bullet Nose, Mar 10, 2023.

  1. George was listed as the "Public Relations" person and apparently handled the memberships. I believe the real push behind the 80's KOA was Group Promotions (Bob Larivee) out of Michigan.

    I was a member in the 90s.
There was a pin available. I had it on a jacket for years. I recently cut off and ground down the stud and replaced it with thin stick on magnet. It's on my workbench now but will go on the dash of my car when it's done. 16815101848438921170850232880508.jpg

My father, Paul Spillman, was one of the owners with Jim Hibbs in the 90's until he got sick and had to leave the KOA. Jim Hibbs took over as sole owner in 1997, from then on not too sure what happened, but it went downhill I guess and was pretty much dead as far as I can tell sometime around 2009 or 2010. If anyone remembers my father or me I would love to hear from you.

@paul spillman, who are these people. And can it be restarted again. Do you have the rights to the logo (trademark)

ISCA: In 1972, I entered my Dad's full fendered '29 Roadster in the San Jose 'Autorama'.
There was an ISCA rep there that insisted I join ISCA, and unless I applied the ISCA decal on the windshield, I wouldn't "do well" in the judging.
Well... Being one of 'those people', I naturally declined the 'offer'...
Sunday evening at judging, I had to 'settle' for 2nd place. Mel Taormino's fabulous '34 Phaeton took 1st.
I was still happy... Dad was thrilled.

I Was at James Dean in 2020 and a KOA trailer and the current owner of the KOA was there, he was so rude to me I did not even get his name. I have heard (but have not fact about this) the owner has been trying to sell but wants a fortune (also no idea what the number is) for the name.

Pay a high price and then figure out how to deal with all the guys who paid to be lifetime members and will expect you to pick up right where they left off. No thanks.

It was there again this year. In its usual spot.

Someone (not me) could start an organization called Kustoms of the United States or maybe Customs of North America. 20230922_173954.jpg

Don‘t try to search for the web adress on the trailer, the content there has really nothing to do with custom Cars. Maybe somebody with quite different interrests has bought this name.
