Have attended the LARS for over 25 years before Covid. Looking forward to going again this year but at 77 I'm a little nervous about going with all the problems in the LA area. Do you CA guys think it'll be safe for an old fart like me? I'll be driving a late model from Nebraska.
I just got back from LA and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. My wife expressed concerns about demonstrations and such but I didn't see any. Unless you have a need to go through the streets surrounding Downtown LA you shouldn't have any problems. I'm 72 and I can understand you're concern about driving in the city traffic but the knuckleheads must have all been home charging their Teslas and Prius'. If you're staying out in the Pomona area you should be fine. Oh yeah. As I left town Tuesday the traffic on the northbound 405 through the south bay area was flowing nicely - at 80 mph+! I'm looking into installing a rollbar in the family truckster.
Pomona isn't LA but still not a good idea to wear your Rolex and drive a Ferrari. Other than that if you use common sense you should be fine. Covid seems to be in check but anything can happen between now and Father's Day.
went down to Pomona for Grand National Roadster Show - Fairgrounds had basic rules about wearing face masks because of Covid. but, like most anything, use common sense and be aware of those around you
Was at the 2022 Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona. They had the covid rules in place and not too much after that all covid restrictions were lifted in California. There are no demonstrations except for the current crap going on in D.C. As said, Pomona is not in L.A., it's only in L.A. County. It's a far away suburb...45 miles east of L.A. I'll be there this year. You'll be fine. Come out and have a good time.
Currently an airline ticket from Lincoln Nebraska to Ontario CA is about 1400.00 plus rental car expense. I used to fly into Ontario all the time but the ticket was 300.00 and the car was 35.00
I'm not sure what problems you're talking about. I don't see anything unusual going on in the area. Though I'm in Orange Co, haven't been into the LA area in a while, but if I had need to go I wouldn't hesitate. There's always potential of some kind of problem, but that's the normal state of affairs. If you felt safe in years past you should feel the same today. Costs on the other hand, yeah, that's a problem.
@krylon32 , a buddy of mine, suggested flying in to Las Vegas, and renting and driving from there. Might help the budget.
Hello, As long time So Cal residents from the early LA Roadster Shows to the present, here is our outlook on any big attending event anywhere. If the pandemic was not here, then it is a wonderful gathering with plenty of history. But, the pandemic is not gone and can affect anyone, anywhere. So, if it is important to your family, then you have to make the decision to attend or not. If you do drive out West, well, at least it will be a nice road trip to So Cal from Nebraska. My wife and I did that route from Kansas City through Denver and drove right through that mass of humanity in LV into So Cal coastal at high speeds. We could not wait to get home and get the comforts of the ocean and its influence. No ocean in sight for a long week+half and it made the day, coming over the last hill to see the big blue. So, if you get this far in your car, you might as well keep going to the ocean. It does offer some great comfort and solitude. As far as the pandemic and age, these days, people still inoculated or not, are susceptible to getting the illness. But, there is less of a percentage if you are. There is a rise in cases in all counties and the Pomona area is no different than in downtown L.A. or even here, near the ocean. There are rises in cases in all counties. That is a fact. So, blame the three weekends of the event in the desert and that was a mass "superspreader" event. Jnaki As far as us old folks 60-70+ lets say that everyone has ideas, but they are not in our age bracket and state of physical health. So, caution is always the best. It will be tremendously hot in Pomona, then when the late afternoon comes, it may be jacket weather. Changes from heat to cold just does not seem like a good place for an older family. The amount of people that go to this event can also be called a "Superspreader." But, that is for the promoters and others to decide on their own. No political statement here, but it just does not seem like it should be happening and a part of a perhaps bigger continuation of the pandemic. As much as we like hot rods and cool cars in the show(and past history) or on the grounds, there will be plenty of photos and videos of the event. YRMV At least, they moved the show from Sat-Sun to Fri-Sat. That Sunday Father's Day event caused a lot of problems from all angles of society... Angry wives, grandparents, kids and other people that wanted a Father's Day event a family tradition within the family confines or activities. But, the lure of attracting tons of father's to the car show kept going until it was changed. So, now, there are options. One of them being, not going to the show to be with the family in the family activities. Live to tell another story...
Agreed...if you can fly into Ontario, the whole "travel" part of the trip will be a snap. STAY AWAY from LAX if at all possible. Mike
Also, Long Beach or Orange County airports are not that far from the Pomona Fairgrounds. Come and have a good time, you'll be fine.....See you there....
I checked a flight from sw Kansas to Ontario. $1255. I won't be flying. I think I paid $800 in 2016. The days of the $300 round trip have passed us by. In 2016, the trip cost $1500 for everything including the t-shirt I bought. Flew out friday morn and returned sunday morn. For me, that was an expensive day of fun. The 50th annv. made it important to do.
Be sure to check the LAR website. A member called recently and stated that the show will be Friday and Saturday only, with load in on Thursday. Hopefully that won't change.
Just flew into LAX last week and back no issues, in fact with TSA pre check I didn’t even have to wait in line. The rental bus wasn’t even crowded. I don’t care for LAX but if it is much cheaper it works.
Hell, no sweat!!-Just drive on in & enjoy the event! This will be the first time I have not worked the registration gate for roadsters since 1972. At 89 I have given my roadster to my son to enjoy as I did for over 300,000 happy miles of line chasing all over the USA.
we have flown over many times and have not had a safety problem, first few years we stayed in a motel in San Dimas but it turned into a dump with a lot of homeless people so we now stay in Anaheim and it is only a half hour drive up the 57 to LARS yes LARS can be VERY hot. I am 73y/o. come and enjoy yourself. you could always book a mobile scooter to get around in, they are very popular
