That video is crazy! That cop harassing the kid with the mullet and silver Camaro was just ridiculous. Noting that that the smog equipment was missing from the motor (no air cleaner, maybe?) and measuring the "rim clearance" at 4 3/4 inches. WOW! Whatya' think that particular cop would think today if he could see some of our modern, low-profile tires!

  6. Man, that's cool video. I saw a LOT of my friends in it. Around the 3.20 mark was Steve Johnson who now races Pro Stock Bike. Bud, in the red 70 Vette is a LONG TIME friend and at one time we were roomates. At around 4.20 was our neighbor Lyle Spindler who raced Jr Fuel, and also announced drags, I believe at San Fernando. And I saw a few other friends. They interviewed me a couple yrs later, and put a camera guy in the back seat of my 11 second Camaro, but it got cut out. The camera guy was all but crying when he got out. He said to just give me a taste and let off. I laughed and took him for a full nitrous pass. It was fucking hilarious.

Thats an awsome vid! Thanks for posting, I never have actually seen any SFV footage from that era... Its interesting what the price to race at a track and the price of tickets were then compared to today... theyve actually gone down?
Not saying I want a ticket of course, or am I complaining..
BTW I cant believe this thread is rated only at 2 stars??

  12. I have my scanner for 5 yrs, and still don't know how to use it. I take pictures...of pictures and post from my camera most the time;)

    Groucho,
didn't they do another news (eye on L.A.?)in 85 or 86 that never was broadcast filmed under the bridges on San Fernando road. i think you raced Gary Hess's 68 Camaro. It was a cool car in its day with a 350 and a real M22 with 5.57 gearing he used to leave the line like the comp eliminator cars in the day,:) 7500 rpms that is.

  14. YES, that's the one Larry Dixon got me involved with. Gary was a really cool dude and his car was huge fun to watch run!!! Whatever happened to him.....well and everybody else for that matter? Anyway that's the occassion I took the camera guy for the nut run. I was nervous to get interviewd, so I put some white wine on ice in a 7-11 slurpie cup. The microphone guy was near me on his knees, aiming the mic pole in my direction for the interview. The interview went fine. But, they later said they couldn't use it because of background noise. They said it kinda sounded like ice cubes sloshing around in a cup:D

Gary is doing just great, he has a body shop in Camarillo and still into racing but vowed never to street race again unfortunately, which things arent like the used to be. He and he son are racing on and off with a 63 falcon at Famoso. Funny story about the filming that night.

Im really surprized no one brought up the ever so hardcore Crippled Kevin (RIP) we met him in the early 80s when he was putting his black 64 427 Chevelle together.

  17. Tell him I street raced my 11 second street Vega the day after Christmas, and it was to most exciting thing I'd done in YEARS.

  18. I met him a ways before that. I posted some stories about him on another thread, or on the Brotherhood of Street Racers board. I'll look for them

  19. I go back over 25 yrs with Kevin. He started his street racing with us in the Valley a LONG time ago. One night, he wants to race my Camaro, and he's telling me his 64 Chevelle's only a 13 second car. I said, let's take a look. This is a Sunday night @ Chatsworth and Zelza. We walk over to his car on a cold, damp night. The windshield is frosted from the dew, and you can see the witness marks where he'd wiped off the 11.70 "dial in" from earlier that weekend at LACR. We both about pissed ourselves laughing like 2 little girls. Love ya man. R.I.P.

Two fast (sleeper) Nova's other than Gary Stoufers that were tought to beat in the day 80s to 90s.

Ed or Steve? Norton, early to mid 80s, primer 68 to 72 with a small block, year and years later he said it went 11.91 on mcCrearys thru the muffs at LACR.

Jose from L.A. 66? Gun metal grey with rallys, never saw it loose from the big tire cars EVER. don't know if he or the car is still around.

  21. I think Norton's car was a bit quicker than that even. Maybe 11.70's. Either way, for a kid fresh outta High School, he had a VERY fast car. He was a real smartass though (like me:eek:). Back then I wanted to strangle him and Larry Dixon, and now we're all buddies for many years.
I don't remember Jose. But Stofer's (actually belonged to my buddy Elliot, and Gary drove it) is still around. A buddy that goes by Racer Bob's got it. It's white and has been the the Van Nuys cruise. It ran really good. Heads up with my ice blue 67 Camaro I had at the same time. 12 teens @ LACR. Elliot wasn't into racing on the street, but he'd drive the car @ LACR on Bottle Bob's Street Race Day that was held once a month. We'd race a friendly $20 @ each one of those. We were about even in win/loss to eachother. The cars were so close, it came down to who "left" 1st. Good times at LACR for Bottle Bob's events. Lots of Valley/L.A. grudge matches with flag start and no-one in the tower

Ok another blast from the past.... Robbie who bought Tony Foti's (sp)Pro Gas? 67/68 Camaro was going to race Fred Flinstones (can't remember his name) big block with N2O Chevy front engine dragster heads up at Canoga and Lassen. He was doing a series of 4 foot tire lifting launches with the Camaro...way to many to count. They finally get lined up and when they left the Camaro sheered all the studs of the right rear and the slick when a flyin and the dragster was gone.

  23. haha, I remember that. Robbie had told me what a bad dude that Camaro was. I told him every time I came out it had some bullshit problem (ignition woes, overheating...), and it was the biggest fucking turd the street races ever endured. Anyway, that night, he puts it almost on the bumper after a burnout. Afterwards he runs up to me, and says, well Grouch? I play dumb, and say I missed it while talking to a friend. He's rattled, and says, fucking pay attention. He does it again, and the front wheels are dangling about at my chin. He gets out, well Grouch? I shrug my shoulders as to indicate i wasn't paying attention again. He's REALLY pissed and now chasing me around some parked cars while I'm laughing my ass off. I really miss Robbie since he was murdered. I considered him a good friend, and one colorful SOB at the street races. Oh, that was another good friend, Randy Nishman in the dragster

Oh, Randy thats it, been along time. Im not badmouthing Robbie but i don't think there was a street race spot where i didn't kick someones ass. Were at the races on Woodley near the Bud plant , Chevy Ray had a 69 Z/28 Pro Street car with Il plates, anyway this 6'6" Biker guy was there with his girlfriend that i don't think anyone knew? As the nights going he takes his Harley and puts his front tire againts the rear bumper of the Z/28 and starts burning out.
Everyone was stunned at it Robbie was like hyper ventelating and went up and chopped they guy down like a big tree and gave him one hell of a ass kicking:mad:. Well that was very deserved.:)

Oh thats the night Chevy Ray gave the Grey 66 Nova of Jose like 3 cars and lost.

I think Cripple Kevin, had a 69 Charger before the chevelle.

  26. Randy lived here in Havasu for a while, but I haven't heard of or seen him in a long time now......

Robbie was a good time to hang around, always some kind of wierd race... either by car, bike or on foot...RIP

    SimiJoe=Mopar Joe?

  29. That's exactly right. One night we're at Sepulveda and Plummer. Some drunk comes flying around the corner (Southbound Sepulveda, making a right onto Plummer) and hits my 69 Chevelle that's parked on Plummer HARD, ramming it into a Camaro that I'd just sold to my buddy Tony B, which in turn rammed into Kripple Kevin's Charger. My Chevelle was a mess, Tony's Camaro was punched pretty good front and rear, And Kevin's car not all that bad. A good picture would've been of the 3 of our faces as we watched it all happen
