I will be starting to fab up my lake headers for my 26 RPU soon and I am wondering what is the distance that the cone should be spaced away from the cowl. I'm not concerned with exhaust burning the paint as I will run turnouts and they will be capped off and the exhaust will exit under the car through a full exhaust system. What I am most concerned with is radiant heat and the paint on the cowl. So, what is the proper clearance from lake headers to the body ?
Good question. Mine are only about 3/4" from the cowl. Hasn't seemed to have caused any problems so far other than the exhaust soot which wipes off anyways. My headers are temporary, when I get the dough, I'm going to get a set of gear drives and ask for a bit more clearance to be safe. If you're looking to quite them down a bit, try the glass pack split in half trick. Worked great for me, much quiter at low revs in the neighborhood bus still sounds like a hit rod when you put your foot in it. Good luck. Posted traditionally using tin cans and a string.
It's hard to tell from this dark picture, but the lake headers on my 23 were very close to the paint and the surface would just get warm, not hot when I was driving it. My 27 is about as close too with no issues. The cones don't get as hot as you think, I shot mine with a heat gun and they only get to about 400 degrees. Don
