Hot Rods Lame power plants.

  1. I subscribe to the "No Lame Power plants, just Lame Owners" school of thought.

Kind of strange that folks are upset by an engine (pre Vortec 350) that last rolled off the production line over 20 years ago.

  3. I get tired of seeing the SBC in everything also but I don't own everyone else's cars. Even though they are ubiquitous, they still are great engines. I have a lame one in a lame 56 Chevy.

I picked the SBC because when I was 6 yrs. old in 19 and 60, my 2 uncles put a power pac 283 in their black '40 Ford coupe because the original flathead V-8 that came in it wasn't fast enough. It was shot and would take much more $ to fix it than transplanting a Chevy V-8.

Now that's HOT RODDIN' at it's finest ain't it?

That made a BIG impact on a little kid!

My 34 Ford has a Y-block, it´s still kinda lame performance wise, but will get a little hop up when the time comes...

I love that dragster! A friend of my Dad's had one of these with a Hilborn injected 327. I remember riding in the push truck as a kid back in the 60's at Oswego Dragway.

Belly buttons? I thought everybody had one, except Adam of course. LOL

image.jpeg Im considering a SBC, only because im having trouble controlling the massive torque and horsepower produced by my banger. Rear tires are expensive, and having to respoke my rear wheels monthly is getting costly as well and just steering it straight when floating the front tires an inch or two off the ground on 1/2 shift puts shit in my neck. Besides, finding a tach that goes 9000 rpms in 4 banger mode is nearly impossible. OR..................maybe I'll just block off one carb and keep it.

  20. Here is the original definition of 'lame' - because everybody had one, they were made for two decades, had a ton of available performance parts . . . and they were cheap . . . just like the SBC . . . just a different point in time! :)

    I bet you agree that a 283 or 265
Pulled from mint tri-five in 1960 looks gorgeous in a 40 coupe. Just a little water, soap, fresh oil and proper TLC and it's beautiful. Maybe even a swap from carb to carbs.
But if you pull one from a 1983 IROC with a modern anodized demon 4bbl double pumper on a modern Edelbrock RPM intake and modern valve covers.

Would you think: lame 350! Aposed to the 1960 283?

The inside bell crank is connected to a homemade rod run in the same configuration as the original fuel/choke adjuster rod thingie. The outside bellcrank attaches to the original throttle crossover assembly that bolts to the back of the block....used 3/16 heimies where ever needed. the trick is getting the throttle linkage to the carb fairly level so the throttle shaft rotates over smoothly. Too much downward angle and throttle pulls against the throttle shaft...too much upward angle and its hard to get full throttle shaft rotation...Took me a couple tries making these things to realise any of this....They now work well and get full throttle just as pedal meets the floorboard.

Don't know about lame, its out of a 68' Riviera. Good for smoky burnouts and wheels up launches. Sure is fun. And it ain't a chebby, furd or a dodge. Gotta score some dare to be different points.
