Technical Larger engines in a 62 to 64 Fairlane

  1. At the risk of being beheaded, burned at the stake, and locked in the stocks, you could put a 327 or 350 in it. I’ll start running now.

You need to wait until April 1st to post jokes like that.

    A sbc is wider than a 351W

  6. A little-known fact. The 351W is 1/4" narrower at the exhaust port compared to a SBC.

You best have small hands and skinny arms if you plan to put an
FE in a Fairlane without doing a lot of mods to the spring towers. Even with the modified spring towers the space between the heads and spring towers on the late 60's big block Mustangs is so limited that it is a hassle to change plugs and forget it if you put cast aluminum valve covers on it.

Personally If I had that more door Galaxy sitting there in the yard taking up space and already paid for and had an FE that I could do a mild performance rebuild on to prep it for racing while being reliable that is what I would use as my "do I really want to do this" race car. No it won't get many Bubba points from the mouth breathers in the stands but you have it, You may already have and engine that will work and it should already have a nine inch. Plus the car gets a status change from old 4 door hulk sitting in the year to "the race car". Or go buy that 7K shell, spend another 1500 putting a nine inch under it, figure out how much modification you have to do the spring towers to get anything except a small block in it or spend the money to buy and build a small block. I'd rather put my money in a cam, good heads and an intake plus a third member out of a F150 that has the right gears and limited slip from the junk yard that has a batch of them.

The more door has a 302 in it now so going to a 351 will be a breeze, the 390 is sitting in a rough but fixable 2 door hard top that I would like to keep togather for now as it could get fixed. Would love to have a lighter Fairlane but not in a hurry and just waiting on a deal to come along, might have to settle for a 68 to 71 as they can be bought reasonable but like a 60s better. With using the 4 door and not having to buy another car will leave me more money for a hotter engine.

Crites has headers for the 351W, FE and 429/460 but you need to make sparks.

Would love to have a lighter car but too many projects right now and thanks for the info on putting a larger engine in a early Fairlane, just going to stick with the larger Galaxies for now since big engines bolt in with no cutting, Got to get the Y block in the Sunliner first and go from there and who knows a reasonably priced Fairlane might turn up one day.
