LaSalle trans question and mysterious pinstriping

That transmission is cool as hell as it is. You're right, I wouldn't clean that off.
Funny though - I finally got my hands on a Model A myself last week - and its a roadster too. I'll be watching your posts very closely since your coupe is where the bar has been set in my mind - you know what you're doing!

 

that looks like a 37/38 Cad/Lasalle transmission. It and the large Buick Roadmaster/Century trans were about the only ones that a nailhead wouldnt eat for breakfast.
