Hey Brian did you have to bust the rim and center apart to have them chromed? I've allways heard you have to do that to get them completely covered. They really look cool like this!

Thanks for all the compliments guys...it really means a lot to me to get some positive feedback.

It's been neat to see this car that I've been dreaming up for the past 5 years become a reality.

I'm not going to run spiders or hubcaps. Back when I first started thinking about running chrome 16s, I saw a pic of a track roadster (like Samiyam was talking about) that was running the chrome wheels with no caps, and I thought it really looked "business-like."

A guy named Catalino did the chrome. He does all the prep work and polishing himself and uses someone else's tanks. I think it's Pullido's tanks that he uses, but I can't remember for sure. I'm really pretty happy with the quality of the chrome. These are old original wheels and I didn't bust them apart...so the crease between the rim and the center didn't get totally plated, but that just adds 'character.' :)

    Thanks everyone! -Brian

  17. Brian, this is the best hotrod I've seen in a long time. Everything you've done is just tastefull and with a strictly business attitude. Awesome man...just awesome.

man oh man, I love chrome steel wheels. Not even magnesium halibrands says old school racer as much as old ford chrome wheels. That's going to be one wicked car.

  19. Brian, Please fill us in on the procedure for getting those rims looking so good. Did the chrome shop do all the polishing or were they just really good rims to begin with? Chromed apart or in one piece? Inquiring minds wanna know.By the way, I dig it!

Dale, they were pretty decent wheels to start with. The front pair was on an old '40 Ford hot rod that was built in the late '50s. The rear pair I got at a swap meet, and they had the original black paint (and some mud grips) on them when I got them. They had never been chromed before though.

I collected about 12 early Ford disc wheels over the past few years, and I think 6 of them turned out to be straight and true. That's the one big piece of advice I can give...make sure they are straight before chroming them!!

To get the wheels perfect, you would have to have the centers and rims chromed seperately and then riveted or welded back together. I chose not to do that and my wheels do have a small area between the rim and center that didn't get fully plated. I kind of expected it, so it was no big deal. I'll just have to keep them waxed and polished to prevent them from rusting in the crease.

To prep the wheels, all I did was blast them with really fine sand in the blasting cabinet, then hand sand them with 180 grit paper. The chrome guy then picked them up, dipped them, and polished them before plating them. He said he had a really hard time getting them to plate where the wheel and center meet, but I still think he did a good job.

These are the same wheels here:

I'm also attaching a picture of a CRA track roadster circa 1950, so you can see what Sam and I are talking about.

    Thanks again guys....

LOVE that stance! The chromies work real well too! This is really a killer ride! Can't wait to see the end result! What type of shocks are those on the front? They look a lot like the 40' Buicks I have on the back of my 27 roadster! Good Luck on your progress!
