Please keep the photos coming. I’m a fan of that pre-billet era.

Wow. What great photos on this thread. I think the photo of the front of the Super Bell coupe is the best composition of a photo I have seen.

Deuce Lover what was you guys inspiration for starting the club and building the style cars you built. I love them. They look very different than the early 60's cars. If you care to comment.

Late 70's, hope I don't offend. Phil Cool's 32. That sucker looks like it would put your eye out! That kid peeking over the dash is great.

    KKrod,
We were just a bunch of friends with Hot Rods that would help each other out and cruise on Fri and Sat nites in the Long Beach,Lakewood,Compton and Bellflower. Most of us just met on the streets and since we also had buddies with Hot Rods or projects.Through all that we networked.Jake and I would organize Sat nite cruises from Oscars in Long Beach to Hollywood and cruise Hollywood Blvd to Norm's and grab a burger.I remember one Sat nite Tom McMullen had heard about the cruise's and showed up.That Deuce HiBoy blew our minds. He of course wanted to lead-he was that way.28 cars that nite.A few over heated on Hollywood Blvd since it was always congested and a few did not run fans.Jake and I would organize picnics to O'Neil Park in Irvine and we all met in Harvey's in Bellflower on a Sun morn and cruise from there.
I personally always loved the look of the early Ford's and in the 50's while growing up in Hawaii bought R&C,Car Craft,Motor Trend and Hot Rod magazines with what money I had. That filled my veins and got me going. There were a few Hot Rods on the streets in Hilo plus my Mom worked at the local Ford dealer.Moved to Long Beach CA in 1959 and finished High School there.I always loved the resto-rod look and have stayed true to that. The "T" I built in 68-69 and the 34 Roadster in '73 (Cover Street Rodder Jul '74) reflect that. Here is a pic of a 32 sedan I built (from a pile of parts and Karl from Deuce Factory frame)when I lived on Maui in the 90's.Drove it to the Roundup in '05 from CA.Sold it to a man in Texas in '06 to fund my new home then.Currently I am finishing a restoration started by someone else on a '33 std tudor here in France. No cure. I will be 73 this month.
We always looked up to the LA Roadsters but not everyone had a roadster and it had to be of show caliber.Jake, myself and the Booth brothers,Don Mabe among a few others got together and said why don't we start our own club.Lo and behold we did.10 of us all chipped in our 10 bucks and it got started. That first $100 bought our plaques designed by Jake and made of brass. The rest is History!

Sheldon - Wow. What a great story. It sounds like you guys were just having a lot of fun and that cruising brought all of you together. Thanks for sharing the picture of your '32 sedan. Just curious How long did the club stay together? And what were the typical cars? I have not yet read the Rodder's Journal article. Thanks again for your comments.

The club is still together and celebrated its 50th in 2015.I was there and was great to see lots of old friends and a few of the first 10.They still have their annual picnic the Sun before Fathers Day at the Compton Rod & Gun Club.

I remember your sedan and your name from the article. To me, that ride was the way Henry SHOULD have built his cars. You live in France now ? Quite a loss for the good ole U.S. of A. I've often wondered what happened to you after you built such a bitchin' car.

I love 70's style cars! The best of everything with no drawbacks.
You can have a flatty, Chevy, ford or even a mopar and be correct.
Same goes for wheels. Wires, mags , chromes anything goes.

Jury is still out on bell bottom pants and Kreepy moustaches though.....

That is the car! I wish I could find the pic I have of it. It has different front wheels. I love that bucket. Awesome! I need to find a copy of that magazine.

Thanks for posting. I'm shcoked my eye is that good.

Now that I think about it. I think They Bucket plans has this car in their picture thread and they talk about. When I'm on my laptop I will see if I can find it.

Jake is kneeling down and looking at the front axle of the 32 roadster built by Doan Spencer. At the time this pic was taken Neal East owned it.Neal has the orange t shirt and foot on the front tire.Jake's ride is the blue 29 roadster with the track nose on the left.It was orig build by Niecamp and won the first Grand Nat'l Show in '49 or was it '50.It is now permanently in the Peterson Museum in LA,CA
