so ive seen these o/ds used in bangers, and have heard they are real strong. from what i can see, they are the same design as a gear vendors.

i was wondering if any body has any experience blowing one up? im getting a 52 Capri soon and it would be nice to have an o/d for cruisin the turnpike.

the car is HEAVY approx 4300lbs, and the engine will produce approx. 200-250 hp.

as far as i can tell, direct is just a straight through clutch, and the o/d is a planetary and band, so in theory so long as you dont try to pull a load in o/d you should be fine. i figure just use it for low rpm cruising at 70+mph.

you can buy these suckers on ebay pretty stinkin cheap on ebay, ive seen em as low as $100, i figure if it blows then ill have my answer. just make sure i have something to put in its place so i can get home!lol.

im currently repairing one that was twisted up like a pretzl. (banger motor too) they are pretty common at the local yards, just look for any manual trans, 80's volvo. it broke at the rear housing, wich was mounted solid to a torque tube. planning on reinforcing that area.

Any idea how strong the newer P-type units are? Supposedly the same as the repro GV units with better clutches or something. I'm looking to put one in my dad's cabover behind the 8BA with a T18 trans.

Also heard they have ford splines?

What does the "P" type come in? I'm looking at these right now as a possiblity for an O/D for my Falcon wagon's C4.

I have both a Laycock and a Gear Vendors. Both do the job. But I am careful with the Laycock. But too, $700.00 vs $2,400.00 does speak volumes to me. The Laycock is behind a really worked over 216 and the GV is behind a worked up 261.

I have been planning to use one and all my research I haven't found any evidence of them failing
