On the motor in my avitar I just primed it with a good direct to metal urathane primer, sanded it and used a bc/cc paint just like I would a fender or something. Been running it in my 40 and haven't had any issues yet, haven't got a lot of miles on it yet but I figured if it's was going to burn or pop off it would of done it first time it got hot.
Can't wait to see your final product, nothing looks better then a smoothed flathead with some eye candy bolted to it. Got to tell ya, you screwed up though;). After you see how it comes out + the reaction it gets from other you'l never be able to do another flattie without going thru the grinder hell. Today I was working on the flathead in the A I built a few years back, rattle canned and out of the box heads, ect. Looking at it and at the one I smoothed and polished in the 40 it's all I can do to keep from pulling the A motor and giving it the same treatment!

you wanna talk about reliable and cheap huh?? how about this "junk" $ 500 flathead that has been in my coupe for the past four years has gone through all of california several times as well as arizona ,utah, oregon, nevada.and much more to come .. and has never left me stranded!! the only reason im putting this new motor in is because the tired ol' million mile flathead thats in it now ..well its TIRED! but still runs like a champ ,starts evrytime, runs cool.. just need something with a little more pep..
so how about this? go take your summit equipped 350/350 combo somewhere else..no one here cares about your cookie cutter car/style.. just keep your negative opinions to yourself.obviously you created account to bag on me, at least have something good to back it up ..as for" smarter guys" you clearly are confused.

thanks metalman. ive been asking around and some guys are etching first then a urethane or compatible polyester high build primer and some say to go directly over the bare cast iron with featherfill or slicksand.. personally i feel more comfortable using an etching primer or epoxy first for better adhesion..

Yeah, I agree, if I had some the day I primed mine I would of used some dp-40 first. I have had good results with direct to metal primers, Pro-Spray was the brand I used.
Not sure I'd use Featherfill or Quicksand, I think urathane would be more heat tolerant then a polyester base product. Take an old panel with paint and some bondo on it, heat the back with a torch and see which pops off first, I'll bet you would find it's the bondoed areas.

    I'm on the ropes!!!

Me? I always play nice. :D:D:D Chris and I were brainstorming flatheads early today via Text. I'm going to trust his judgment when it comes to my '33's engine. However, the fast you get off your ass and get the new engine whipped into shape the more inspiration I have to keep me out of the Brand X thinking on that car.

Have you seen 777's video on the Sandy Belonde roadster that was posted today? Ford/Miller race prepped engine with a 4x2 running 20% nitro? Now that's something to be reckoned with.

Don't worry JJ, when your finally building a flathead and your thinking "I could have built five 307's for what this junky ol flathead is costing me..." it will all be worth it when you start it up for the first time, take it for a spin and snap an axle trying to screech the tires around a corner :D

By orange motor do you mean Hemi, or Chevy? Because JJ would push us in front of a bus to get either. I did have a SBC in my truck once...I was hauling it to scrap :D:D:D

First of all Hemi's (the real ones 331,354 and 392's were Silver or Gold). Second 265 Chevy's were painted Red except for in '57 where the left overs were painted Yellow (before going to the 283) so I know of no "orange engine". :D :D :D

Why is that Sasquatch Chris even allowed on this forum. This is for hot rodders. You should stay over at Fordbarn. At least you Lazy8 are building a Hot Rod engine. Chris plays with bone stock 21 studs and banger engines that would have been laughed right off a Dry Lakes meet in the 40's. :D:D:D:D XOXOXO You're still my hero CHris even if you're considered slow by 1939 standards.

Yep, looking pretty stock huh sugar?

Too "souped" up for the restores to like me, and not "SBC" enough for JJ to like me :( I guess I'll just go to the island of misfit engines

I was reading the specs on the Sandy Belonde Roadster today and upon seeing the pics of the block with all the casting marks removed the caption said "The block was polished to relieve stress risers". Can anyone elaborate on it? The block they used was a High Nickle block and looked like it was polished aluminum. I guess all race prepped flathead engine done by Miller were done that way?

    I wanna know more!

Also which are the blocks with high nickle contents? They's stronger and more resistant to cracking or????
