leaky coil

    Hey Guys;
    Has anyone had a problem with leaky Mallory coils (mine is model 29625) new out of the box??
    I ordered one from summit..it leaked....they sent me another ..it leaked...they sent me another....it leaked! I got in touch with Mallory...they sent me one ..you got it.. .it was also leaking .worse then the first 3!
    Don't get me wrong...the Summit folks are great and really tried to help..as did Rick at Mallory......great folks ....but wtf!!! ANYBODY??

    Sounds more like you have an electrical problem causing the coils to go bad. Either that or your luck is worse than mine.

    I never had a problem with the same coil. As stated above it sounds like the coil is getting too hot. Have you discussed the problem with Mallory tech of just the warranty department.

    Does it have an internal resistor or does it require an external resistor? I'm ***uming it's a 12 volt coil. I have heard of 12 volt coils leaking because they get too much voltage and need an external resistor to reduce the voltage. Not all 12 volt coils require 12 volts to work properly.

    Mine leaked , turns out there is a screw in the coil tower that holds the wire connector AND a rubber washer , simple fix , tightened the screw , has not leaked since ...that was 2 years ago ..

    I guess I forgot to say that the coils were never installed....they were leaking in the boxes they were shipped in ...all 4 of them!!!
    Any suggestions for a hot coil for my sbc strocker race motor
    The 29625 has the spec I was looking for!

  8. Never had that problem I have one on my Willys now that is in its 3rd car. New in '03.

    A coil that leaks in the box is one that was not properly sealed at the factory unless it'd been dropped and cracked.
    The top of the can is crimped over the coil top and there is a rubber seal there. If it is not properly sealed, it will leak. Some coils also use a screw in the center of the terminal as mentioned above, but not all are made that way
