So, I'm considering building an HA/GR but am confused about the rules over here in SoCal. Will I be able to run it anywhere at all with a car built to the HA/GR rules? Or, what other rules do I need to comply with?

  2. 1. look at the first thread here in the HA/GR section, that's your benchmark
    2. if you want/need to run at a NHRA track, add a second hoop bar(ie doing the cage similar to any of the oz cars or SDRA cars, and a few extra safety items (arm restraints, firesuit)

There are a few small details here in oz that we've had to include, things like battery boxes, shock absorbers, a 'catch' plate under engine (inlines), and a few other minor common sense things, but nothing wierd or unrealistic.

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

Use the Altered section, follow the general reg. in the current NHRA Rule Book and I think you'll be fine. I'll try to explain a couple of reguirements I missed. 1st You will need a 5pt cage minimum, keep your helmet 3" behind the front bar. The hoop spacing needs to be close enough to keep your helmet from getting thru the bars. 1 5/8", .120 wall is the minimun dia allowwed in Mild Steel. 2nd Keep your shoulder bar (bar that the Roll Cage Hoops conect too) above your knees and include a dash bar over your legs. I missed these by a little but have been fortunate to get thru TECH at Bakersfield. GOOD LUCK, Rocky

A couple points: If the cage is 6 point, then 1 1/2" o.d. tubing is ok. There is a little more to it than that so get a rule book to make sure you build it correctly. It is possible for .120" wall tubing to be thinner in spots than the .118" wall NHRA spec. Most fab shops that sell roll bars/cages use .134" wall tubing to ***ure it will p*** tech. It is doubtful that HA/GR roll cages would be sonic tested by the drag strip techs however.
I think Rocky did a great job of building a legal cage that looks quite vintage.

Rocky. Any chance of you posting 1 or 2 pictures showing your cage for us new guys that are looking at building a HA/GR in the near future. In my 40 years of racing in the SoCal area I have found that if you build the cage close to NHRA spec's with the proper sizes & wall thickness it tends to keep them from looking for more that needs changing. I have raced a NE-1 & NE-2 car at Bakersfield before and they do have decent Tech people. Hope to see you ride at the first ANRA meet. Thanks and good luck, Tom

Here's an early drawing I did on my paint program. Not to scale but our basic design.

Toymaker, thank's for the cage pictures. When I up graded my first FM dragster I installed a 5 piont cage in place of the 3 point and we bent the tubing in the old style that was more rouned and not flat on top. Your setup looks real nice. I will look you up at the first ANRA race in Bakersfield. Thanks again, Old28altered, Tom
