Hey guys. I know some of you will probably be attending this years Race of Gentlemen. I love shooting these type of unique events. I shot last year with a canon t2i with the stock lens. I didn't expect anything amazing to come from that lens/body combo. On top of the bland stock lens photos I made the mistake of not shooting raw last year which I always do so I wasn't really able to correct the photos as much as I like to. This year I've upgraded to a 60D and a sigma 30mm 1.4 mostly because I use it for a lot of film work. I do love the depth of field I get with the 30mm esp at 1.4 at close range, but knowing I won't be able to get as close to the cars this year, especially in the pits, I figured I'd rent a lens for the weekend. So let me know what lens or lenses you guys recommend renting! Just keep in mind that my 60D is a cropped sensor body so the lenses MM will be tighter than they actually are. In the meantime here are a few of my shots from last year. Not super happy with them but if I was able to shoot some of these angles with a better lens I know the outcome would have been way different.
I have a D200 and about the only 2 lens I ever use are my 35mm f/1.8 and my 70-200mm f/2.8. The 35mm is great for the close up stuff and the 70-200 works great for when I need a little more reach. If you're back a little ways from the action, I think you'd be pretty happy with a 70-200mm. I'd love to someday get me a 400mm f/2.8, but I just don't have 10k lying around to spend...
Thanks a lot. Yeah I was looking into a 70-200 or a prime 80mm maybe. Borrowlenses.com has so many lenses to rent and they're super affordable. I couldn't imagine buying these lenses at retail. With the rental options popping up these days it makes it way easier to get awesome shots without spending the insane amounts of money. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I haven't had a chance to rent any lenses from them yet. I'm probably going to rent one for the next big show I go to. It's the only way to go with the skyrocketing prices of today's camera gear
Haha thank you very much! I appreciate it! Neither have I although a few friends of mine have had good luck with them. I can conceive spending 400-500 for a good all-purpose lens, but unless Im making money using this gear I can't see spending over 1000 for a lens. Might as well rent.
