I recently started a couple of build threads about our adventures while building a couple of big block Chevys. I’ll let you read the details on how these two builds have come about here: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/a-tale-of-two-big-blocks.1246022/#post-14250350 The is gist of it is, I’m looking for a ’46-’48 Ford project car and a couple of really good deals on some engines have come about during the search. Well, it seems it has happened again. The same buddy at work in one of the big block stories and I were talking, again, and he asked if I knew of anyone that would be interested in a 327, but its not his, he just knows a guy that has one for sale. He texted the owner and verified the price and we set up a time that coming Saturday for me to see it. It in fact was 327 (casting number 3932386) ’68-’69, 2 bolt block. But it has a cam and rotating assembly in it? While my buddy calls the owner to see what the price is, for what I’m looking at, I start checking things out. The pistons are marked 4.027, which is .030 over, and the casting number on the crank is 3932442, a medium journal 350. Before I can share my findings, he comes up and tells the price is correct and it includes the stock intake on the floor. Right as I was getting ready to hand over the cash, it hit me! I don’t see an engine hoist! But that wasn’t going to stop me, I wanted this thing in my truck! He and I with the help of one of my sons got it loaded and strapped down and we were off, with another engine! The plans for this one should make a good looking and running little engine! I’ve got a set of 3917291 heads (67-68...302/327/350, no accessory holes, 64cc chamber), that I picked up at the Kyana spring swap meet, that I’ve got to do a little more investigating on, but I think they are the smaller of the two valve sets that those heads could have come with. While I was there, I also picked up a timing cover and oil pan for it. I’m want to run a Edlebrock C-26 intake with 2, probably about 500 carbs, and nice Clay Smith cam. I want to made it look traditional-ish with finned Corvette valve covers, although I have a set of Chevrolet script stamped ones that would look cool! Let me know what you think and if you have some parts for sale. I’ll be posting updates as I go.
What do I think..........you had me at 327! My 327, 291 heads/2.02's, of course my vote goes to script rocker covers.
@DDDenny Thats what I'm talkin' about! You make a good argument for the script valve covers there! If my heads aren't 2.02 now, they will be! Have you seen the thread about 327s and PVCs? I noticed your line.
Sound's like a good plan. Does that 386 block have a spot for the breather in the back or a boss to machine for the breather? If you get tired of the Corvette or the script valve cover's, there's always my favorite go to...
Ain’t that the truth! Lol. This is the latest one I’ve been following/posting in. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/327-with-no-oil-filler-and-breather.1265351/
This thread reminded me of an engine that was in the works back in Michigan a number of years ago. It was going to be a 302. 283 crank, 327 small journal block (it's still in the garage as is the crank and the Hilborns and Cragar front cover). The heads were new Chevy Corvette aluminum heads from that era. Look closely at the pan: it came off of a 350 that sawed itself in half. Patched up using another pan front. Ahh that would have been a high winder! Moving east in 98 put the kibosh on finishing it... Picture was taken in the basement. Fun getting a built engine up the stairs and out to the garage.
