You must not be an old drag racer
okie , I love your car as I have said many times and understand everyone likes different build styles but I am an old drag racer and those of us that are, love the big tires under the fenders and always have. Thats where the term big and littles came from. You probably wouldn`t like the way I am building my 40 coupe . 60`s drag style. It has period correct ET III top fuel wheels available in the early 60`s under the fenders with a 3 pot 348 mill and 64 Muncie 4 speed. Don`t take this as a beef. Just trying to let you know where some of us others views come from.

You are correct, I am not an old drag racer. I was just stating my taste, not criticizing anyone else's. I will like your 40 even though it may not be done to suit my taste. I can still appreciate your taste and how you build your car. That is what keeps this hobby interesting to me.

  3. I thought that the "bigs and littles" originated because guys were running smaller tires in the front and taller tires out back, to gain rubber rake.

I like '40 Fords. I tend to associate wheel tubs and big honking slicks to a later period of drag racing. The gold '40 is cool, but it's not something that I would build, because it's beyond my preferred taste.

Here's a shot of my '40 stake truck, with Big and Little "modern" radials. It's definitely a '40 that falls outside of most guys preferred tastes since it doesn't have a pickup bed. The cool thing, to me, is that it's mostly stock, with a factory Ford embossed stake bed and all original wood.

Big n littles were originally about tall tires in back and shorter ones in front like 8.20-15's in back and 5.60's in front.

As far as the drag car tubbed reference, since the Hamb is supposed to be a 65 and earlier forum, and drag cars didn't really have tubs until the pro stock cars of the '70's , that doesn't hold water either. You can't even use funny cars as an example because the funny cars of 65 were the afx cars.

And the front wheels on the gold 40 (which looks like a very nice car, but it doesn't belong here) are torque thrust 2's which are a modern loose interpretation of the original D spoke.

Lets please get back to celebrating the 40 fords 75th birthday with some traditionally styled versions that fit this forum

  8. If anyone knows what a traditional 1940 Ford Hot Rod should look like, Ken Gross knows.

I regret ever saying anything at all about the gold car and the comment by Moriarity about it. I had no intent to start a flame war. Enough has been said on that let's drop the subject before this thread gets locked or even deleted. PLEASE!!!!!!!!
This thread has been a great display case for what I regard as one of the top cars Ford ever built, so don't beat on this anymore!

The only thing worse than getting rained on while you are out in your '40 is not being out in your '40.
