Is it just where i live?

I was hanging out at a local cruise- in having a great time, (which I have been doing now for a couple of months after getting my 51). I like going and looking at other cars seeing what they had done to them. When it hit me…why are we sitting here?
Lets go drive these things! It was so cool when I was a kid seeing a group of old cars running down the road. Why aren’t there more cruising events? An event that has you drive from one place to another. Nothing long, a run from one burger joint to another. Why does it seem that only the bike folks do that? Has it always been that way?

It's illegal here unless it's a specified event in which permits are required:mad:

I find this very hard to believe, I can understand if you were to have a cruise night that ends at or is up and down Main St.

But to require a permit to cruise from one location to another
    is nuts.

    I'm glad I don't live in Michigan.

What Troy may be referring to are advertised and preplanned cruises. Both Bay City and Auburn Michigan have had shows that included cruises that were heavily advertised. One even tried to set the Guinness world record for most cars on a cruise. It seems to me that these prompted some negative reaction by the cops.

Ahh well that makes sense..i guess..But that would be steping all over your First Amendment rights wouldnt it?

but ive been in large groups of hot rods going from burger joint to bar..etc.. and never had any problems.

also rode with a Michigan Group of Harley Riders--(not H.O.G.) over 30 members strong back in the late 80's thru the mid 90's and we never had to get any permit to ride in a group

Interesting topic guys, but strip away the cars and bikes and do you realize what you're talking about?

Are we worried that Big Brother doesn't want too many of us gathering together? Geez, I didn't realize it has gotten that bad.

Dude, I'm with you 100% percent about the lame sit-on-your-ass car events. Drive the thing. Cruise. And whether everyone follows around like ducks or just tool up and down the streets, it's gotta be funner (more fun?) than just reminiscing about how it used to be.

I think most of these anti cruising laws pertain to cruising the same route over and over again like we did back in the 60's. Funny thing was that the cops then seemed to like it because they could keep an eye on all of us with very little effort at the time.
But then we didn't have thugs with guns looking for other thugs to shoot at.

I don't think there is an issue with 20/30 cars hitting the road with a common destinaion and traveling together.

Here in Central Washington if a group of us decided to meet at a common starting point and journey to another common point I see no issues. There is a retro eaterie about 60 miles and a heck of a nice drive on a fine afternoon away that would be fun to cruise up to with a group.

One of the local clubs seems to have a "lets ride up there, they have good _______nights at least once or more a month as I saw them at the local place with the good burgers the other evening.

this is another reason why I don't mess with hot rodders, now the new cars that race between traffic and totally disrespect others on the road. I will mess with.

I would never give a ticket for cruising from one place to another as long as your not drag racing and putting other peoples lives at stake in doing so.

I love racing, just don't do it on the street where others are.

I tried that a couple of months ago. Started at an old burger joint and ended at the Continental Club. It was fun, but a bunch of people started leaving early to get a good spot at the club! It was still fun, so we'll try it again real soon.

I never did understand "cruise night". People cruise to a parking lot and sit for hours and then cruise home (around here, it's the same people bitching about the same thing. Week after week, month after month). When I lived in Pleasant Grove TX we actually cruised the blvd. Stopping for a burger or when we saw some friends to bench race with & then back to cruising.

I totally agree. What's even stupider, IMO, is entering a judged car show which COSTS you money and having your ride judged by someone that may never have built a car. Why would I pay to provide the entertainment ???

I have a hard time with park-and-sit shows. That's what I miss about rodding in the 70's and 80's; we'd all be driving somewhere instead of sitting around a lot for half a day watching spectators. Streetkhanas, poker runs, anything with the car driving. That's what they were built for; not to be the anchor for some lawn chair.

It's been a long time since i actually wanted to go to a "cruise night"..for the same reasons that have been mentioned.
Walking around, looking at the same stuff wasting time aggravates me..
I have been told i have no patience to 'sit'..and those who have told me a right...and i find that's what happens most of the times at them....
I think i've gone to 3 or 4 in as many years..and only stay 10 to 15 minutes at most then i'm gone.
I'd rather drive around aimlessly in my old tin than sit...
Having a multiple places to hit in one night would be cool though..10 to 15 minutes at each and hit the road!

This would be a good idea especially if somebody had a car that needed some roadside support, just incase.
Hell even if it was only four or five cars on a Friday or Saturday night cruising from one burger joint to another that would be fun.
IM always out on my own watching the temp gauge and just wanting to cruise a little and get back home.

i have only been to one big show....... it was very cool to see the work everyone had put in.......but imagine all those cars on the road at the same time.......man that would be a site.....Right!...johnny

  24. A few weeks ago me and a couple guys decided to do lunch and a cruise out of the blue. I only had a couple hours to play with but we had a damn good time for something that was thrown together in five minutes.
I remember leaving a cruise night last year and heading home and thought how nice the pipes sounded and how the weather was perfect. I went past my exit and just kept going, then realized that it was two in the morning and all my friends would be in bed and I had really no-where to go. I brought her back home feeling cheated somehow as I shut it down and walked into my house where everyone was sleeping too.

There's a local cruise-in I go to on Monday nights. I asked one of the organizers why we didn't cruise a circuit around town a few times a night and he said the Lebanon police would shut it down. I remember burning a tank of gas on Friday and Saturday nights cruising Woodman Dr. in Dayton in the 70's and 80's. Cops only fucked with you if you got stupid. My favorite part of cruise night nowadays is the drive home down back country roads at dusk. Yeah, I said dusk. Everyone is gone by dark.

It all changed when people started suing organizations for tripping over at their events. It does not have to be big, just organized. There are laws in the US that have filtered here in Oz regarding Public Liability.
That is the culprit, as the organizer has to pay for the insurance it is cheaper to do so for a stationary event than one that includes a transit phase.
