I don't often laugh out load at something I read on the internet, but that was a great, graphic comment...I am still laughing! "I think I threw up a bit in my mouth..."

I really like B. Gibbons truck...looks right too me. I've never really been a big fan of the severely layed back grill shell, maybe that's why I prefer his. I agree that some of these trucks just make good hot rods...MUCH less expensive than the more common hot rod stuff.....but DAMN are they easy to FUCK up. There are some really bad ones out there.

    Perhaps my favorite......

I canceled my American Rodder subscription after that heap was in it :p

The few that arkracing posted are cool, but not the same style at all.

  7. They're called Rudy Trucks not Bobber Trucks.

I like RUdy's... I like that black primered one... and there's like one other one I dig... Billy Gibbons' truck is cool... but after that, the rest aren't my bag... especially the ones with long noses.

That said... I saw one in Popular Rat Rodding Magazine that looked kinda cool... I don't know that I liked the grille... but the rest was cool. I think it was even a '40 cab...

Not that anyone cares but I really like these trucks if done right. I am currently building one, a 37. I am trying to proportion it right. I think these trucks get too deeply channeled in my opinon and they lack something in the front. Mine will have the top hood to tie it all together and make it flow. I will also be trying a totally new concept, I will be painting it for that "finished" look. Some have said they are "over the look", the same could be said for 32 3 windows, or 40 coupes, or 29 Highboys......... all a dime a dozen. But as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just my .02

I think they can look really good.......Just like any other HOT ROD........If the builder has a good "eye".

Hot rods, like modified "T"s......"T" buckets........or other abstract Hot Rods like the "bobber" Trucks, are actually harder to get right than a 32 Hi-boy. A 32 Hi-boy has around a 106" wheelbase (give or take a inch or two) with the wheel placement for the most part a given, but when you build an abstract Hot Rod it's up to your "eye" along with grill placement........hood length........bed length.....ect.

The fact that you can pick up a cab at a reasonable price, fab a box, and build one on the cheap = A KQQL HOT ROD to me!:D

    JimA is right on.

If you can't use it for a truck - even if you aren't hauling dirt or plywood - why the hell do you have it? But then again I don’t like it when people throw the term hot-rod around so loosely either. Not every fuckin’ car made before 1964 is a hot-rod. But I guess that is just my opinion. And if your parts chaser can't hold as many parts as a roadster then what's the purpose? Go build a T-bucket, it's the cheapest thing going - and they can be pretty damn cool when don't right. Going by some of these trucks though, that's going to be the challenge. maybe that's why noone builds cool T's anymore - you can put a bunch of goofy garbage on it and build it all wild.

On the other hand I also think that everyone has a right to build what they want. And by all means go ahead, build your self a (*Dee-dee-dee* - gayest name I've heard yet) "bobber" truck if you want – while you’re at it go put your hair into a jelly roll, roll your sleeves up to your armpits, cuff your jeans and find a orcabetty tattooed philly to hang her fat leg over your tire at a show. “Just like the 50’s, bro.”™

But when your truck bottoms out and takes the oil pan with it, your spine collapses from the impact, your hair jell makes your hands too slippery to steer out of the ensuing donut and your arms have fallen asleep from your shirt being rolled too tight - don't look at me.....

And when you're about 75 years old and you get ready to bang your tattooed Betty - and her cherry tats look more like raisins – so you can’t help but lick her wrinkly tats (for the fiber o’course) - I'm going to laugh my nutz off......

BTW - I am not bashing on all of the trucks posted, just the ones that are build all crazy just for the sake of being more radical than the next guy. Especially some of those pictured in the link posted at the beginning of this thread – yeesh. That kind of mentality bugs the shit out of me. I guess I must be weird. It’s the same reason I hate that over-chopped, over-channeled, diesel truck tire wearing, sitting so low it looks like it’s broken Model A that keeps popping up and causing shit.

As for Rudy’s truck. I think that he got by my radar because he did two things right. He gave the truck enough bed to allow it some degree of usefulness and he did his best to keep his eye on the proportions(lines) of the truck from all angles. The later year cabs can look kind of piggish and the visual weight would be hard to balance. Ohh and he didn’t tack on a bunch of do-dads and paint it flat black with red wheels. Billy G.’s PU is ok too for many of the same reasons.

As I said before it's all about the lines and about keeping a purpose for the vehicle. If a vehicle isn't built for a purpose - you can subtract the first three letters off the word purpose and go sit on your hood ornament…..

Ryan hit on something when he posted about how he worried what his car would look like sitting next to the Busby duece man. These trucks look childish and have no class whatsoever.

    I'm done here.

    I couldn't agree more.

But I guess that means that my bobber truck project with the 69 f100 cab on a 77 Smokey and the Bandit edition Trans-am 6.6 chassis with the 32 grillshell and 4 foot tall zoomies is now on hold.

out of curiosity what did you do to this truck. the proportions are perfect. what is the wheel base? chop, channel, bed shortening, etc

    thanks -

and what kind of inside cab dimension did you end up with as that engine looks to be set back about 6" into the cab

  18. Heres a picture of my truck, also built because it's what I had to work with.
As to having a purpose, the only thing this truck haulsis ass. Oh, and my Schwinn.
I hope the picture comes through, I suck at this computer stuff.

i bet if you pulled the front axle back about the diameter of the wheel it would make a huge difference visually.

This debate could possibly be border line Hot Rod/Rat Rod I think. The ones that look good = Hot Rod, the ones that don't = Rat Rod.

I would have to agree with "SinisterCustom" here, We build these things 1st, because they're FUN and 2nd becuase they become an extension of our thoughts, labor, expressions and perhaps a snap shot of where we are at this point in our life or maybe where we'd like to be. For me I'm not making a ton of money and I have a young family, so I'm building a low buck hot rod that can carry 3-4 people (hence a 38 Chevy 2 dr sedan). If I had a ton of money I'd build a 32 roadster or coupe (like everyone else of course). If we built these hot rods for a purpose they would have 4 cylinder honda motors and fully independent suspensions, because whats the purpose of a car? Its to get you from point A to point B. With the price of gas, a V8 just doesn't make sense.

I think the true reason to build a hot rod is to describe who you are. Yes thats very cheesy, but I gotta believe thats why we do it. I am building mine to express the thoughts I don't express very often, the lifestyle I wish I could live (sinister, dark, wicked, etc.), but can't because I'm too damn responsible......you know what I mean. Anyway, enough B.S.

Bobber? Sounds like what I say to my wife, usually prefaced with Kneel!

For me these trucks are TITS! They are one of many ultimate tests for a builder. Does he 1st have the "EYE", and 2nd does he have the fab skills to pull off the vision. You can put #'s too it, for every 1 Rudy truck, how many "ABORTIONS".

Now try that #'s game with the duece crowd. Man, unless they pastel that bitch and put it on spinners, your going to give it the thumbs up. Thats why this is a challange, a gamble. Are we as good as we think we are? Can we build, and it not look like POOP?

I do still believe in to each his own, and different strokes for different folks. But if its ugly I'm not going to hide my face when I laugh and point.

As far as "Whats the purpose?". Well you could say that about anything, its about your vision, and what gives ya a hard on thats all.

There have been a handful that are on the tops list.
Rudy's Tijauna Stripper truck (belongs to RuralRods now)
    Job Corps blacky
    The recent Dirty7 from Canada
    BGibbons truck
Corky Cokers (sorry dont remember the builder)

These things are REAL, the look good in my eye, their builders succeeded in proving they have the skills and the "EYE" to back it up with. Good job!

Lighten up........hes called it a bobber because its ass is cut off and its chunky....similar to a bike, I suppose...........I reckon the real reason you guys are getting all anal about it is because you think he is trying to start a trend here by using the term......now, that cant happen anymore because it all is under the watchful, judgmental eye of some here, watch it, because sometimes giving it the attention by rejecting it can make it even more stand out...if it fits, it will stick..if not, let it slide on by...where do you think the last 80 years of rod terms come from anyway.....or is it because he hasnt earned enough respect in showing his skills here...... fuckin cyper bullying is what it is.......and as far as purpose goes......thats the last thing on most peoples list here.......honestly do you wear clothes? I bet they have a certain style in them......actually I have a big fucken old red chicken suit here that will keep you warm, washes as one piece, is comfortable and was cheap, it will be great for someone who has purpose at the top of their list, and looking like a rubber scrotum second .................that raisin tatt shit was killing me though.:D ......I suppose what its about is art and style and getting one of these to look good is the challenge....otherwise we would be all driving ?................build what you want my fellow tin twisters and let those who judge you fall under the same ruling.....art is about reaction and thats what drives it.............I felt someone had to throw one towards the bobbers;) dont throw stones if you live in a glass house....and wear clean underwear ...........Bert

Is this what they mean by RAT RACE?!!? No wonder noone refers to the ratrace as a good thing!!

  29. In my case....the purpose I have for building trucks is to piss people like you off! I don't haul dirt or plywood in the first place and I buy and build trucks because that's what I like. I don't tell you what to waste your time and money on and I'll be damned if I'll let you decide what I want!
