I don't think I was the only sign painter, that spelled bad.
I use a trick,I'd have who ever wanted a show sign , or name on there car ,painted !,Asked them too write it out for me! That way,if they spelled it wrong,I was kind of off the hook a little LOL :D;)

DSCF4747.JPG DSCF0722.JPG I've had this sign for a MILLER 122 that Ira Vail bought new and entered in races all the way from LA to the East Coast, he sold it to H.D.Carpenter in Philadelphia. Carpenter keep every bit of paperwork related to running the car for a year. I've had the stuff for close to 50 years now.

I had this sign made up for the 2019 GSTA show in St Paul, Minnesota. Because “the green truck” sounds so much cooler in Spanish, I called it El Camion Verde… image.jpg

There are some cool signs here, interesting to see all the variations especially the older ones. Hand painted signs are the best. Did this one using One Shot on blue plexiglas for our old '39 Ford coupe.
I think the car was in exactly two indoor car shows which seems like a lot of effort for so little exposure!

Taken at the Toppers' show in '82, still running steelies then - liked that look better but had a slight clearance problem with the rear tires when we started hauling a camper around so switched wheels...

    39cpe_fargo82.jpg

The coupe was sold (it's still around, in the Twin Cities area) and when we finally got our '39 sedan on the road, it wasn't even completely painted and never was anywhere near show worthy. But we did a few local outdoor gigs. So I cheaped out and did a small sign I could just stick in the window. I think I used that sign about twice as well.

And the car that caused it....

No longer have either of these cars but I do have the signs stuck on the wall of my garage. And IF I ever do another car show sign, it will be hand-painted. I just like 'em that way. :D

  11. Since I have had access to computers I've used this basic design for each of my cars:
    Cruisin_Placard copy.jpg
I added this to the Merc's display showing the coverage it got at Custom Car Revival (awesome show btw):

I will have to dig out some of the older hand made ones I had done prior to PhotoShop..

A photo of Dennis Rosetti's 1923 Ford Paint by Ron Schramek

    upload_2022-11-20_3-47-1.png

    Hello,

When we were wandering around the preview day of a car show in Long Beach back in those early photo shoot days, I went to school with a kid named Schramek. He was a good athlete and had skills in baseball that surp***ed most at the catcher position. We were on several school teams and the local outside of school teams as teammates.

When we got to high school, he was on the varsity baseball team. I concentrated on football after getting shut down from several 6’6” guards in basketball and a kid that had a curve ball that did not curve on time and that I could not see it drop, either.

But, as I remember, he had an older brother and the name Schramek rang a bell. Perhaps the older brother branched out into the field of custom cars and paint jobs.

    Jnaki

I had no idea until I saw the show lettering display sign that he could be the same Schramek that I had known earlier in our growing up days.

I've had both of these for some years. These are the real deal. I have thought about selling them before thinking they belong somewhere more important than the corner of my garage, but I haven't brought myself to it yet, although, I feel they are a very important part of hot rod history. Each "sign" is signed by Ivo on the back. Check out the misspelling(s) on the yellow "Twin Buick" and the Magneto on the CT Special. Guess spelling wasn't that big of deal with TV Tom.

If the cars still exist, it would be great to reunite the signs with them

Not exactly a show sign, but I put this on my ‘29 CCPU when I park it in a place reserved for hybrids!

  26. I cant find the pictures of the sign right now, but when my son, Joe, "Dual quad 55", here on the HAMB, turned 13 years old in 1958 I took him to the Pomona swap meet. Just down the street from the swap meet on Saturday was a small car show. The sign that I saw that impressed me was a 2 sided, light blue plexigl***, with water in between the plexigl***, and Goldfish swimming in the water. I took a couple of pictures of the sign, just so that people would believe me. I wish that I could find the pictures to post them here..

A big thank you to everyone that posted, I appreciate the inspiration! Here's my sign for the Cleveland Autorama this coming weekend. I gave the local Artist some info and a few pics from this thread and told him to do his thing. Not exactly what I would have done but I dig it. The name... I've owned this car for nearly a year and I can't seem to find any info or history on the car so "Blind Date" seems perfect.
