I could really use some pics of how carson tops are held in place or any other removable roof, for that matter. I don't care if it's new or old technology, just want to get some ideas. Post whatever you have!

    Thanks!

It IS for the car silly boy!! :D I'm doing a removable insert and it needs to be mounted securely so it doesn't go flyin' away on me. I have to modify the cut-out area for some fail-safe latches of some kind. I have a ton of ideas on how to do this without installing something I'm going to whack my head on, but thought I would see what else has been done before I start ordering fun thingamajigs. I think Carson tops offer very similar mounting for what I want to do.

Here's a thought... T-Tops or Targa type tops might be mounted similar as well. Very similar concept...

id like to see some carson top latches myself, i might cut the roof off of a 50 tudor and build me a carson top for it. i want to see what the original style looked like that came out of the shops in the late 40's and early 50's.

    Sorry about that.

I posted IMG tags and they would not show. URL seems to work.

Anyone know why a Picasa link will not show?

do a search on boat accy's. they have lots of chromed and s/s latches that may fit your application. I have simple locking latches that I found in a boat catalog.

DUH! OF COURSE! What the hell is wrong with me! Hatch latches and stuff like that. I'll check out Rex Marine and see what I can find.

    Good idea!

JEESH! My boss is a big time boat guy! He's going to be dissappointed in me for not thinking of that! HAHA! :D:eek:

It is a quick release latch system for a jeep cj hardtop.

    http://www.4wd.com/subcategories.aspx?cid=37&jeep-sid=473

If this link doesnt work,go to 4wd.com,then select 76-86 cj,hardtop acc. They are a few different types, but I think these are the only ones small enough to make work with some tweaking/fabbing.

Hard to visualize how that works... Any pics of them installed?

BTTT... still looking for pics and ideas.

Doesn't anyone own and 80's firebird or a Z-28 or something? Any Porsche 911 Targa owners out there? How about a Honda Del Soleless?? Nissan Z? Anyone? Anyone?? Come on... CONFESS! Someone out there still has a huge mullet and sports an 80's firebird and jams out to Whitesnake and RATT!!!:D

Scooter, The Del Sol has a super simple single handle release. It works like the door of a safe with retractable pins that engauge to the front and rear.

Ooooh....I like the sound of that. Use tapered pins so it pulls the insert firmly into place against a weather seal...nice.

BTTT... seriously, I don't know anyone around me that has something with T-tops or a Targa top. If anyone can provide some pics it would be helpful. Last time I'm going to bump this.

    :D Riiiight! :D

I'm thinkin' most of those targa type tops have to be pretty simple. One or two pull handles controlling multipul "bear claw" type latches or something.

what about some sort of magnetic lock?

In sharper image a few years ago there was a magnetic lock that unlocked with a negatively charged piece of steel. Ill do some searching.

I think this is the way I'm going to go...

Couple pairs of mini Bearclaw latches. I'm going to use a slide bolt as a safety (suicide pin) as well. These latches are small bodied, simple and cheap.
