Painted my first and second deuce pickups with Krylon satin black. Each truck took about 2 cases. Sadly the new Krylon blends we have available at Walmart, Ace, & True Value don't spray the same as the older Krylon paints. That's how I got my HAMB name, Krylon32.

  4. For those of you who painted the whole car, how many cans did you use? I am just curious as to cost/# of cans etc. I understand it all comes down to pre and post prep.

I think with my 47 Ford coupe it may have been 4-6 if I remember right, but that was just rustoleum primer and nothing else. That was the body and the doors

Just got done installing a new wiring harness in my newly acquired 51 chevy 3100. Building a daily driver for grocery getter. While I had the dash all apart rattle canned the dash with Gun Metal gray from Lowes.
Off to Hershey at the end of the month to hook up with Sid for an exchange of a 3 inch drop axle and some front and rear Posies 3 inch drop super slides. Runs and drives and now everything work with the rewire! Took me about two weeks in between kids baseball and cheerleading!

Don't know if I'm allowed to post pics of this past weekends project, but it took a couple of cans of Rustoleum JD green. For some reason, they decided not to use the big flat-top nozzles for this paint. I ended up with a cramp in my hand and green all over my hands and feet.
I think I might try one of those spray can handles

  8. I wouldn't call it excellence, but I was pleased with how my heater refresh turned out. It's Rustoleum Hammered Bronze from the can, but it's cheating because it was blasted and epoxy primed through a gun first. I can't remember now if I sprayed any clear on it.

My wheels are Rustoleum Almond from the spray can, but don't look too close, they're kinda rough. I sprayed some from the can into the airbrush jar, then airbrushed some spots to touch up chips sometime last year. The color matches, but the finish doesn't. The typical level of dirtiness the truck maintains hides it well enough.

I also restored my license plates with Duplicolor primer, Ace spray cans (chosen for the yellow color match), and Rustoleum(?) black decanted and airbrushed, then wet sanded so the black was removed from the top of the characters. It looked really good until the black top coat started cracking. I need to strip them again and do the same thing but with a gun and hardener and all the big boy stuff so it lasts more than a few years.

Made this a few years ago. Made the mailbox, stand and rattled can it and "patina" the paint. The numbers and pinstriping was done by a guy named Greg in Berwyn IL box1.jpg box2.jpg box3.jpg box4.jpg

Another tool that produces fine results is the can handle/ pistol grip by Krylon. Just like using a spray gun, excellent control, way easier on the index finger. Just don't shake the can holding the handle, hold the can instead.

  12. OK all of you rattle can afficianadoes, I have a question. I have some fenders covered in Rustoleum red primer. Can I spray urethane directly on to that or do I need a sealer?

Admittedly neither was done with rattle cans however the Chevy is a gallon of rustoleum mixed with mineral spirits through a gun- took a LONG TIME to dry. The roadster was brushed on tractor paint. Cheap is as cheap does, sir

    Nice work guys!
No pics but I grew up jamming my finger on cans of John Deere Blitz Black. Loved that stuff! Grabbed a case from the local dealer when I moved off the farm just so I wouldn't be without...
Loved the old blue caps with the twistable fan pattern. Saved and swapped those onto standard cans.

Rustoleum sells a spray can that has an adjustable nozzle. Great idea but the ones I tried leaked and dripped paint all over me and the floor.

    Hello,

After many tries with our supply of paint spray cans on various bicycle tubing, red wagons, go karts and even on old fenders, the result was not what we expected. They just did not look like the ones we saw at car shows and custom car/hot rod shops. But, it was to be expected. We were kids and into the teenage years.

But, as a pre-teen and my first spray can experience on my brother’s 51 Oldsmobile two door sedan’s wheels, I learned to finalize my approach and finish technique for each color spray. Back then, most had full size hubcaps from Dodge Lancer 4 prong flippers to Oldsmobile three prong big flippers on their custom cars. My brother’s friends had a array of those hubcaps and other styles, so there were the random hubcap exchanges that happened at our teenage gatherings in our Westside of Long Beach house driveway.

Since I did not have a license and it was still three years away, I was the “kid” who took off the hubcaps and put them on the other teens cars for a different look. The older teens all stood back and admired the latest look or creation on their old sedans and hot rods. Oldsmobile three prong flippers on my brother’s two door sedan looked great. So, after many different combos, he bought a set. The moving tires//hubcap display was pretty cool.

But, after a few road trips, cruising to the local drive-in restaurant parking lot, daily school trips, the Oldsmobile at times had to pull over to go catch the rolling hubcap from the center divider or right side curb grassy areas. Everyone tried the “safety wires” looped into the lug nut and air valve opening, although it did prevent the hubcap from rolling away, it now stayed on the car, but the car had to stop instantly, otherwise, the hubcap while still attached with the safety wire banged around until the forward motion stopped. The rim’s paint job usually got some damage in the process.

So, I got good at repair paint chips and scratches on any rim of those older teens cars. But, my brother finally got wise and did not want those 4 prong or three prong hubcaps rolling away or banging around with the safety wires, so he had me paint the rims black. Then he proceeded to go to the local speed shop to get a set of real Moon Spun Aluminum wheel covers. If the Oldsmobile was not the fastest car in the group, then at least it would look fast and intimidating.

My paint job got covered up, but it sneaked a peek at the edges. Over the following years, I got better at the spray can wheel paint jobs. One coat looked good, but the constant removal and replacing the full size hubcaps did a number on the painted surfaces. Despite a clear varnish coat, it still got scratched. (The polyurethane clear sprays and color derived poly paints had not arrived as yet in any stores.)

So, sanding, and several light coats of spray paint was the procedure. If someone wanted to try the painted on varnish, then that was done, too.

    Note:
Prior to the last black on black wheel photo above in 1965, I put on some Buick Skylark Wire Wheels to get rid of any further “painting the steel wheels.” But, they got stolen and the black, Buick steel rims arrived to be the last color on my Impala.

Everything that has paint on my 34 is rattle can. (except wheel centers) I was gonna name it "Rattle Can Express" but haven't yet. Body color is Pontiac engine blue, it was too shiny, so I knocked the shine off with a Scothbrite pad. The steering wheel is the only thing I left with a shine.

I have a couple of OT pieces that I used this 2K clear in a rattle can on. Both projects are aces. One was a headlight assembly that went from terrible to looking new. The other was a metallic 2 stage factory paint job that the clear had failed n one small area - it brought that right back.
Paint Society guy on YouTube seems to have a lot of great tips.
The Eagle abrasives no clog, dry abrasive system is surprisingly good.

For a whole car I figure I will use about 20 cans. Some of the secrets to lay down a nice finish, shake all of the cans prior to use ( you don’t know how long they have been on the shelf), and again just before you use, remove all lids, use the first until it starts to sputter, toss it aside ( you can use the leftovers elsewhere), then with the can that you have been shaking in your other hand continue until same . Repeat as necessary. Also, a cool, windless, and overcast day is optimum.

Does anyone use rattle can bed liner on rocker panels, inside fenders etc?
How well does it hold up?

Last year I was spraying some Dupli-Color rattle can primer on my brand new steel A rear fenders to protect them. Got the can ready, and first spray on the fender it spit up a bunch of crap right along the body line on the outer edge of the fender. Looked like a stipple ceiling. I find the variability in the cans can make doing a good job out of a spray can challenging.

I painted this 1968 Benelli with rattle cans. I went to a paint supply store that was able to package automotive enamel into aerosol cans.

I used rattle can bed liner on my running boards. It’s durable and and easy to touch up. Overall I’m happy with how it turned out.
