Jean Shepard said it best : "Some men are Baptists, others Catholics. My father was an Oldsmobile man."

    My old man was the best. When I was growing up in the fifties, he had a '49 76, a '51 88. a '53 Super 88 2 door, a 55 Super 88, a '58 Super 88 WITH the J2 option, and last , a '62 Dynamic 88. That's why I love these cars. Keep 'em coming.:)

A '53 Super 88 2 door was probably the hottest American car that year. And probably right up there with the Europeans, as well.

Not my Olds but it looks like my uncle Fred was an Oldsmobile man. This was in our family photo album dated 1956. The Olds is a 55, it would have had hand controls because my uncle Fred lost both legs in WW1. Looks like it was a four door Hardtop?? IMG_7012.jpg

'50 wagon cost $55 & 3 days yard work. It's a 3 speed. The granny lady I got it from was in her 80s, ran a tiny cafe from 5am til 3pm & smoked those short Kools . She outworked me in the yard ... Oct 20, '19 #2 040.JPG

'50 DHC with a '52 98 eng/trans. my buddy rebuilt senior year '66. He stuck it in a '50 convert, & never drove it. I pulled it out, stuck it in the hdtp. 3 weeks after getting it together a carload of drunks smacked it. Got it in prime & traded it. Not Mine, but I couldn't get enough of this '57 seen at dead man's curve this past Labor Day in NJ. It was one of my favorite cars there. BTW----one of my bucket list cars is a '49 / '50 olds coupe... 20250830_190544.jpg 20250830_190559.jpg 20250830_190614.jpg

Can anyone out there think of a worse screw-up "face-lifting" one particular model than Oldsmobile did from '57 to '58? The '57's are sublime; the '58's so garish that they stand out as an extreme example of '50's excess.

I don't think that's true at all. For 1958 GM opted for a design ethos that allowed most makes to share distinct shapes, but with unique trim and features to stand out. The 1958-59 Cadillac is far more garish and excessive, and the I'd say the same for 1958-59 Lincolns.

I'd further propose that of the BOP makes the Olds was the most Conservative of the 1958 Front ends:

I suspect your personal preference is simply for 1957s and that's ok.

I suspect it may be more than a personal preference...

BTW, your dad has a beautiful '58, which, given my background, I would be proud to own. I think however, that that may be shading your opinion.

Isn’t all of what we do in this hobby personal preference?
