    Hello,

In the days of early car shows in Los Angeles, some of the biggest ones were not at the LA Sports Arena. They were down the street at the historic Shrine Exposition Hall compound. The Exposition Hall was built for convention displays, art shows, a large flat floor for displaying custom cars and hot rods as well as drag race/Bonneville cars. Then in the later years, my son and I went to several comic book shows that were deemed one of the largest on the West coast.
upload_2023-6-10_4-13-17.png The Shrine Exposition Hall is around the corner from the massive Auditorium. For as many people that filled the Exposition Hall, it never seemed crowded, car shows or comic book shows. But, it did take a long time from opening to the late afternoon to finish the shows.

But, what about rock concert venues? The Sports Arena was huge and originally held the L.A. Lakers from Minnesota. Over time, when the season was over, it needed something to fill up the arena. Even during the season, a venue was necessary for the exploding rock music touring scene.

So, the nearby Shrine Exposition Hall was used and was ok. But, the next door attached building, the Shrine Auditorium was used for things like the Academy Awards Oscar presentations and TV Emmy Awards shows called the place home. The interior was fully insulated for quality sound and comfortable seating with sights all pointed to the stage.

During one of the pro basketball season time periods, we went to a much anticipated rock music event in the Shrine Auditorium. We had seen the advertisements posted on telephone poles all over So Cal.
upload_2023-6-10_4-19-50.png We liked the poster so much that we bought a real, thick paper poster from a local record shop in Belmont Shore. It got attached to a wall in our apartment. It is now somewhere in the storage attic files for safe keeping.

My wife and I happened to be at a party where a friend mentioned rock concerts. He had just gotten a job as a promotion/backstage rep for a big name concert promoter in the rock music scene. When we asked if he knew anything about the concert coming up at the Shrine Auditorium in February of 1968, he said that he could get us into the event. No worries… his words: “Just show up at the door and I will get you guys into the event…” We were happy at that bit of information, agreed, and went on with the late evening party action.

We were leery about the show and did not take the record shop owner’s offer of two tickets to the event. A word is as good as gold… so the old saying goes… On the day of the event, we drove up to Los Angeles early to get situated and perhaps a good parking place.
upload_2023-6-10_4-22-40.png 1968 Shrine Auditorium parking lot + venue structure...

As we were walking around the neighborhood, since we were a little early, I took this photo across the huge lot at the massive architecture of the Shrine Auditorium. The red El Camino is parked out in front of the massive building.

Yes, we finally got inside of the auditorium at the last minute. We had been standing around since the doors were opened and waited with anxious moments, as everyone in line moved inside. Our friend finally came out of a side door and told us not to worry.

Anxiety over and it was going to actually happen… He led to our seats in front of the packet auditorium. It was as if we were “stars” getting their private seats, which were in the stage level balcony, just steps away from the performers… including Jimi Hendrix. Lucky us…!

A galaxie is a very rare police car in real life..but custom 500 is more like it.
64 someone ordered something 30-50 64 fords with heavy duty options somewhere south/mid america and there started riot or civil war and we finns got whole shipment full of nice heavy duty american fords.
This story is a true and legend here.

    Hello T,

It was the time to travel as my wife and I made a pact. We marry, have the marriage fun times and travel as much as we can before responsibilities pop up. So, we traveled all over So Cal and then the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and finally made it to a 40 day vacation of the Grand Tour of Europe. (including Salzburg) We were still young enough to make the trek, all over the place and still feel excellent. But, we are home bodies in So Cal most of the time and used to travel to the PNW once a year. So we love to travel.

The Shrine Auditorium and attached Exposition Hall are still around. It is next door to the USC university campus and the Los Angeles Coliseum/Museum/Exposition building in one giant location. It will be the center piece of the 2028 Summer Olympics, again. The old Sports Arena where the Lakers first came from Minneapolis and played until they got their own arena, is now gone. So, no more L.A. Car Shows there.

    Jnaki

So Cal is a great place to grow up in certain areas. We have lived here since the 40s and my wife has lived here off and on since the 50s. We are locked in place, but it is a good place near the ocean for our daily lives. Our immediate family is nearby and extended family a 30 minute drive away. YRMV
