Our car in front of the Stratham, NH ice cream place, enjoying our first cruise of the season and our first ice cream visit. This being season 51 for me and the missus, God Bless her, she still perks up when I say let's get the coupe and go get ice cream. 007.JPG 006.JPG

our car in front of rural NH's version of the food truck craze, a shingled Winnebago that shares a dirt parking lot with the local NAPA store. Good cheeseburgers and killer onion rings, close enough to NED to hear the funny cars at the Nationals today, sort of gear head Musak while we dined. 001.JPG 003.JPG

    Your car in front of…
1965 red El Camino @ The Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium

    Hello,

There are many iconic structures in Los Angeles, none more famous than the Shrine Auditorium and Exposition Hall on Jefferson Blvd in the USC neighborhood. It is actually located on the backside of the university, a short hop to the 110 freeway. It has been the home to numerous concerts and big time Hollywood events.

In 1966-68, we have been to many concerts here and for a 10 year period between 80-90, we went to many comic book shows and sales events in the Exposition Hall around the corner. Because it is centrally located near the LA Memorial Coliseum, Exposition Park, the History/Science Museums, and the old LA Sports Arena (home to many super hot rod/custom car shows), it is well known and easily accessible via the surrounding roads and freeways.

“In 1906 The Al Malaikah Shriners built the original Shrine Auditorium to serve as a civic center as well as their home base and clubhouse. In 1920 a fire burnt the building down in just 45 minutes. With plans to add an attached expo hall, The Shriners began rebuilding almost immediately. In January 1926 the new Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall opened and quickly became the center of entertainment in Los Angeles.

With a capacity of 6,300, The Shrine Auditorium is one of the largest theatres in Southern California. It also boasts the largest proscenium stage in North America. The Moorish history of the Mason fraternity inspired the building design, and with classic interior décor that is both beautiful and functional, The Shrine Auditorium is a perfect space for a wide variety of events. The attached Expo Hall is 54,000 square feet of versatile event space that can fit up to 5,000 people.

Over the years, The Shrine has housed a wide variety of high-profile televised events including the SAG Awards, the Grammys, the Emmy Awards, and the Academy Awards. An incredible assortment of musical acts have graced the stage, including the late Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix and Jack White. The Shrine also hosts orchestral concerts, ballets, film festivals and theatrical performances…”

As stated in So Cal thread, the side stage balcony to the left is where we had private seats with one other couple to watch the all time classic Jimi Hendrix Concert. The performers were just steps away from the balcony. Jimi Hendrix came over to that side of the stage and did his classic guitar love scene.

We were lit up with colored spotlights during the performance and was a little daunting with 1000s of people staring. But, it was the rocking 1968 era and a little notoriety never hurt anyone. Who were those “stars” up in that balcony? Ha!

The venue is still going strong, today and still looks the same with the Moorish-Style architecture. The neighborhood, well, it is a little shaky at night and rough during the day, even with the big university across the street.

  18. Down at Mama's house, back at our house, over at Carrie Furnace in Braddock/Rankin, drove to work.... probably too much, but I figured why not play along.
