Those bulbs are 2 piece, form fit together, and not welded. I think they are for expansion, and allow flex to keep the pipes from cracking due to heat and vibration. It's a "Stunt" Plane.

I build all my own headers, exhaust systems etc. Rarely take pictures. A few of them are HAMB friendly ish. I rebuilt / restored the Bathtub headers and built the Zoomies on the Redd Wrecker.

Built a lot of custom headers, and like how custom looks vs same old aftermarket repetes. So I stared looking for old pic's,but looking like I have lost one of my many albums at some point!.
Only found a few, the set of pic's I wanted too find are gone maybe.
Back in the 1960's,I had a Studebaker Lark Daytona that I dragged race some, { Super charged,4 speed with TT } I ran NHRA F-Stock* with, the class was legal with custom hearders added> So I built my own<none after market at the time anyway,,! I made my own with 4 tubes pre side* vs Studebaker heads have sim-center EX ports so would be 3 tubes by most.. But I built my headers with a tongue* as part of the center headers two pipes< that did stick in to head an divided the sim EX { fitted very close the inter port shape. Being a welded part of the headers*,and not the Study head, made it legal. Worked well, matched the NHRA Record.

Over the years,an lots of miles on my old high school hotrod,a number of hearder set have gone bad/by uses. Each time,I'd try a little def. design=more for a bit of new look then anything. This last set I made, for the Ford "Y" V8 engine in my old rod,I cut up a set of Chevy SBC V8 chromed headers,I got for free, from my buddy Rosh{ I had help him built a 23T w 350 SBC years back. He cracked a chrome EX tube were it was welded to header plate, and just went an got a brand new set. He gave me the broken SBC chrome set.
To his shock,I held them next to Ford "Y" block head,an screwed the end bolts in=with out doing anything; yes Ford has same end EX spacing. The center how ever,Ford use's a bolt between center pipes{ with little space between center EX ports}, So I just cut off the chrome SBC headers from the Chey EX flange, pushed the center pipes apart a little ,an welded them to Ford "Y" block flange, making sure the angel was right for Ford "Y",an painted sliver the welds n flange . Low $ chrome Ford Y hearders.:D:cool: Bobtail 28 roadster DB's.jpg Welding an cutting up tubes, can also be for intakes, I've seen some nice log intakes over the years. Did a few my self ,the 4x2 you see on my old high school rod, I made by cutting up a drive shaft*welded to gether=that made just size log I was looking for.

I needed a set of Lake headers for the Olds motor on my coupe project. I used a kit for a SBC that had a tapered section that was the right length that I needed.
    IMG_1355.JPG

The header flanges I used from Hell's Gate to fit the Olds motor have square ports, so I made a die to form the ends of the tubes to fit.

Here it is all welded up.

I added bottom dropouts to run to mufflers under the car. I made my own flanges for the dropouts.

For this, I did header runners into a 4” collector. The Buick was not too wide for the frame, but required a little clearancing to get equal lengths.

Back in the sixties, ready made headers were available for relatively few applications. Building your own was not uncommon as it is nowadays. Block hugger designs have become the norm as they often clear steering for many different applications.

I started to make headers for my Ardun, but could not figure out how I wanted to get to where I wanted to be on them. This is as far as I got, it's on the back burner for now. 7-21-24-1.jpg

You have built a lot of really nice-looking headers, Marty! I recently purchased a car that came with a set that I think you did. A lengthened Model A Roadster with a Hemi mocked up in it, ring a bell?

Yeah, that belonged to Pete Balch. I still have the collectors with his name on them. He was getting on, when I fabbed all of the center crossmembers too. I have photos of all the work. Donn Lowe did the sheet metal modifications.

  27. I came across this photo and had to stop for a moment and thought, "what am I looking at here"? Then I remembered. I had to make space for the clutch linkage and room to adjust it, be able to get the Clutch out without removing the headers and stay above the bottom of the frame rails with everything. I did manage to get that done but Geezz! Give me a Hot Rod without fenders any day.

  28. They're ET Classic V's.
I ordered them with minimal backspace to look extra deep, like a '60's dragster, then narrowed the rearend to fit. Most people do it backwards; installing a rearend first, then searching for wheels and tires to fit.

To stay on topic, here are two more header under-construction pics:

My recreation of Heddmans for use in a '32 Ford with a 409. Custom machined plates, mandrel bent tube, lots of hand fitting.
